CANCUN, Mexico -- A hot-shooting Purdue took the lead early and topped Wichita State, 86-49, Thursday afternoon at the Cancun Challenge in the Epic Ballroom at the Hard Rock Hotel.
The Boilermakers out-shot WSU, 51.7 percent (30-58) to 35.8 percent (19-53) for the game, which included Purdue's second-quarter 68.8 percent (11-16)
WSU was led in scoring by
Rangie Bessard's 12 points, while
TaQuandra Mike had 11 in the loss that dropped the Shockers to 1-3 overall. Purdue's Dominique Oden led four double-figure scorers with 23 points as the Boilermakers improved to 2-3 overall.

Despite the deficit, WSU buckled down in the third quarter, out-scoring Purdue, 18-15, by the 1:45 mark to cut the Boilermaker lead to 19, 64-45. Six Shockers scored in the third led by Mike's five points as WSU won the quarter, 20-16.
Purdue extended the lead back to 24 points, 69-45 by the 6:23 mark of the fourth quarter. The Shockers got their first basket of the final frame at the 3:55 mark, a Bessard layup. Bessard scored the Shockers' only other basket in the fourth, as well, to cut the lead to 81-49, at 2:57.
The Boilermakers went on to win the final frame, 22-4, and the game, 86-49.
To open the game, Purdue jumped out to a 12-4 lead by the media timeout at 3:39 after an and-one by Morrissette. Two treys by Oden gave the Boilermakers an added boost during the run.
Purdue closed the quarter by out-scoring the Shockers, 9-5, to extend the lead to 21-9 at the end of the first frame.
TaQuandra Mike highlighted the final three and a half minutes with a trey to give WSU its third basket of the game.
Mike opened WSU's scoring in the second quarter with a three-pointer, but the Boilermakers answered by out-scoring WSU 13-5 by the media timeout at 6:27 to take a 34-14 lead. By 2:33, it was 44-18 for Purdue.
WSU had its best offensive output of the first half, scoring seven points in the final 2:33, but Purdue still held a 23-point lead after Stovall hit a three at the buzzer, 48-25.
Purdue out-shot WSU, 58.8 percent (20-34) to 34.6 percent (9-26) in the first half to win each quarter, 21-9 and 27-16, respectively. Oden led the Boilermakers with 13 points at intermission while Bessard led WSU with six.
