ARLINGTON, Texas -- UT Arlington held off every Wichita State charge to take a 74-70 win Sunday evening inside College Park Center.
UTA led for 33 minutes of the 40, while WSU was on top just 2:45 of the four-quarter game. The Shockers charged back each deficit, the most which was just nine by UTA at the 4:24 mark of the third quarter, but the visitors couldn't hold the few quick leads they had.
WSU was led in scoring by Texas natives
Rangie Bessard and
Diamond Lockhart's 16 points and 13 points, respectively. Oklahoman
Tamara Lee had 11. All three women, along with Arlington native
Aundra Stovall and Texan
Jeliah Preston played in front of family and friends that numbered more than 75 wearing black and yellow in the road venue.
Christina Devers led UTA with 22 points while Rebekah VanDijk and Cierra Johnson had 12 each.
WSU took its second lead of the game, 40-38, on a three-pointer by Williams at the 9:17 mark of the third quarter, but the Mavs took the lead back on the next possession and extended it to seven, 48-41, during a Shocker scoring drought that ended with a Lockhart bucket at 3:47.
UTA's lead went to nine at 4:24 but Lockhart's basket, five Shocker free throws and a bucket by
Brittany Martin, helped cut the Shocker deficit to 60-55 at the end of the third quarter.
UTA held the Shockers at arm's length through the first half of the fourth quarter, holding a 67-61 lead at the 5:52 mark. A traditional three-point play by Stovall, though, cut the lead to five, 69-64.
At 3:07 Lee took the ball out of the hands of VanDijk as the Sunbelt Conference Preseason Player of the Year committed her fifth foul. Lee made her two free throws to cut the lead to three. UTA then scored, and Bessard made two free throws, and then a basket to cut the UTA lead to one, 71-70, at 1:37.
Devers made two free throws to extended the Maverick lead to three, 73-70, and on the next Shocker possession, Bessard picked up her fifth foul on an offensive charge with 47 seconds left. Lee committed an offensive foul on the next Shockers' possession after a Devers free throw, as well, and UTA held on for the win.
UTA used its press and defense to build a seven-point, first-quarter lead throughout the first eight minutes before WSU battled back and finished the frame on a 7-0 run capped by a three-pointer by
Jeliah Preston with one second left. UTA won the first quarter, though, 18-16.
In the second quarter, WSU tied in at 26-all after back-to-back baskets at the 6:56 mark but the Mavericks kept the lead the remainder of the frame to take a 38-37 halftime lead. However, WSU did win the second quarter, 22-20.
For the half, WSU out-shot the Mavs, 51.9 percent (14-27) to 37.8 percent (14-37). WSU was led in scoring after the first two quarters with eight points from Bessard, while eight Shockers put points on the board. Mattingly led UTA with eight points.
WSU out-shot UTA 47.8 percent (22-46) to 41.9 percent (26-62) for the game.
