Postgame Press Conference WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State was unable to overcome a slow start to the second half, falling to Missouri State, 77-57, on Saturday at Charles Koch Arena on Alumni Day.
Wichita State scoring was led by
TaQuandra Mike, who had 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Jaleesa Chapel also added 12 points and five rebounds for the Shockers.
Missouri State was led by Kenzie Williams who had a game-high 16 points and added six assists. Tyonna Snow had a double-double, scoring 15 points while she had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Lady Bears.
Earlier in the day the Shockers welcomed back approximately 40 former players and coaches for an arena tour and an hour-long Alumni game before being introduced at halftime of the Shockers' game. An Alumni dinner with the team following the game completed Alumni Day.
Wichita State quickly gave Missouri State a 15-6 lead to open the game, but a strong defensive performance by the Shockers cut the lead to 20-15 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, a basket by
Rangie Bessard cut the Bears' lead to two, but Missouri State quickly pushed the lead back to five, 30-25. Both teams finished the first half strong, and Missouri State took a 36-31 lead into the locker room.
Missouri State opened the second half on a 15-6 run and pushed its lead to 51-37. A three-pointer at the buzzer by
Aundra Stovall cut Missouri State's lead to 59-47 with one quarter to play.
The fourth quarter began with both teams trading baskets but Missouri State eventually went on a 10-0 run to push their lead to 76-53, with 2:04 left to play in the game.
Wichita State scored four more points but were unable to mount a comeback, giving Missouri State a 77-57 victory.
Both teams shot 45 percent from the field for the game, but the Shockers had 24 turnovers to the Bears' 16. Missouri State was also able to grab 18 offensive rebounds while Wichita State only had nine.
The Shockers are now 5-15 overall and 2-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Wichita State will be in action again on Friday, Feb. 5 as they travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take on the Drake Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
