MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Freshman
Shimen Fayad had a career-high 13 kills to lead Wichita State to a 3-1 win over Albany at the Marquette Invitational. The Shockers won by scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-17 and 25-12.
Fayad also added 10 digs and hit .273.
Emily Hiebert had a double-double with 49 assists and 14 digs, while
Dani Mostrom had 23 digs.
A kill by
Emily Hiebert gave the Shocks a 4-2 lead in the first set and a block by Hiebert and
Abbie Lehman made the score 7-5. A 7-0 run by the Shockers increased the lead to 14-6 and WSU went on to win the set 25-18 on a kill from Lehman.
The Great Danes raced out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but the Shockers came back to take a 10-9 lead on a kill from
Shimen Fayad. A block by Lehman and
Katie Reilly increased the lead to 15-11, but two-straight service aces by Albany tied the score at 17. The two teams traded points until a block by Lehman and Reilly gave WSU a 23-21 lead. The Great Danes ended the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-23.
A service ace from
Gabi Mostrom put the Shocks up 6-3 in the third set, but a 4-0 run by the Great Danes put them in front 7-6. A block from Lehman and
Jenny Whitledge put the Shocks up 12-10 and two-straight kills from
Jody Larson increased the lead to 16-11. Albany used a 3-0 run to pull within 18-15, but WSU won the set 25-17 on three-straight service aces from Fayad.
The Shockers opened up an 11-4 lead in the fourth set and increased it to 18-10 after a Great Dane hitting error. WSU closed out the set 25-12.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Sept. 25 when they host Indiana State at 7 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
