Reilly Leads Shockers to Win Over Marquette



MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Katie Reilly had a career-high 20 kills to lead Wichita State to a thrilling five-set win over Marquette. The Shockers won by scores of 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 26-28 and 15-13.
 
Reilly had 20 kills on 39 swings with just one error and hit .487. Emily Hiebert had six kills, 48 assists and 15 digs, while Dani Mostrom had 23 digs.
 
A kill by Emily Hiebert gave WSU an early 6-3 lead in the first set. A kill from Mikaela Raudsepp increased the lead to 9-5, but the Golden Eagles tied it at 13 with a block. The Shockers went back up 19-16 after a Marquette hitting error and took a 23-18 lead on a service ace from Dani Mostrom. WSU won the set 25-21 on a kill from Abbie Lehman.
 
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 4-0 lead in the second set and used a 6-0 run to go in front 13-4. A 6-0 Shocker run cut the lead to 16-11 and a Reilly service ace pulled WSU to within 20-18. Two kills from Raudsepp and a Golden Eagle hitting error cut the lead to one at 23-22, but MU scored the final two points for a 25-22 win.
 
A kill from Lehman put the Shocks up 5-2 early in the third set. The Golden Eagles came back to tie it at 10 with a kill and took a 13-12 lead with back-to-back kills. The Shockers took a 14-13 lead on a block by Hiebert and Jody Larson and increased the lead to 18-15 on a block by Katy Dudzinski and Shimen Fayad. Two-straight service aces from Hiebert gave WSU a 23-17 lead and the Shockers won the set 25-18 on a block by Larson, Lehman and Reilly.
 
The fourth set went back and forth until a Fayad kill gave the Shocks a 12-8 lead. MU then reeled off five-straight to take a 13-12 lead. The two teams traded points until MU took a 20-17 lead on a Shocker hitting error. The Shocks rallied to tie it at 22 and no one could score two in a row until the Golden Eagles scored the final two for a 28-26 win.
 
Two-straight blocks by the Shocks tied the score at three in the fifth set, but the Golden Eagles went back up 6-4 on a kill. MU led 8-7, but a kill from Fayad and a block from Lehman and Hiebert gave WSU a 9-8 lead. WSU took an 11-9 lead on a block by Lehman and Reilly, but MU scored two-straight to tie it at 11. WSU responded with another block and a Reilly kill to take a 13-11 lead. MU pulled to within 14-13, but Reilly gave the Shockers a 15-13 win with her 20th kill of the night.
 
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. against IUPUI.
