Photo Gallery WICHITA, Kan. – The Shockers hit .310 as a team as they defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies 3-1 in their second match on opening day of the Shocker Volleyball Classic. The Shockers lost the first set, but then won three straight by scores of 24-26, 25-23, 25-16 and 25-17.
Jenny Whitledge led WSU with 16 kills and added 19 digs, while
Emily Hiebert had 56 assists. Four Shockers had double-digit kills.
The Huskies were leading 20-15 in the first set, but serving aces by Hiebert and
Shimen Fayad helped to rally WSU to tie it at 24-24. The Shockers couldn't overcome eight committed errors though, as they dropped the first set 24-26.
Seven different Shockers notched at least one kill during the second set, including Fayad, who hit the set-winning kill. The Shockers led 18-12 at one point, and fought off a comeback effort by NIU for a 25-23 victory.
The Shockers hit .450 as a team in the third set, and committed only one error. WSU never lost the lead as they won the set 25-16. Whitledge and
Katie Reilly both had five kills in the set.
The Shockers led the entire fourth set, and
MaryAshton Floyd racked up six kills in the set as WSU won the set 25-17. Northern Illinois' T'ara Austin also had six kills, but the team hit .143 in the set.
WSU improved to 5-3 on the season. The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Sept. 11 when they play No. 21 Kentucky at 8 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
