Shockers Knock Off No. 21 Kentucky

WICHITA, Kan. – The Shockers hit .278 as a team, winning 3-2 against the University of Kentucky Wildcats with scores of 25-14, 24-26, 15-25, 25-23, and 15-12.
 
Katie Reilly led all Shockers with a career-high 19 kills. Abbie Lehman, Emily Hiebert, and Jody Larson followed with 10, nine, and eight kills respectively. Hiebert also added four service aces.
 
Kentucky took an early lead in the first set, but the Shockers came back strong to win the set 25-14, with a .483 team hitting percentage led by Reilly's four kills.
 
The Shockers and the Wildcats traded points most of set two, but the Shockers ended up dropping the close set 26-24.
 
WSU jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the third set. Despite multiple errors, the Wildcats came back strong and took the set 25-15.
 
The Shockers maintained a close lead for the majority of the fourth set, and led 15-13 at the media timeout. Kentucky closed the gap to bring the score within two, but WSU finished with a score of 25-23 to force set five.
 
Kentucky took an early 4-1 lead, forcing the Shockers to call a timeout. WSU rallied back and took a 12-11 lead and forced UK to take their own timeout. Back-to-back aces by Hiebert brought the Shockers to within set point, and a kill by Reilly won the match 15-12.
 
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. against Texas State inside Charles Koch Arena.
