WICHITA, Kan.—Wichita State's softball team lost to Indiana State by a score of 5-1 during the MVC Softball Tournament Quarterfinals inside Wilkins Stadium. With the loss, Wichita State falls to 34-23 (16-11 MVC) as Indiana State improves to 24-29 (13-13).
The Sycamores took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second due to a RBI-groundout by Alexa Cavin with one out. An inning later, Brooke Riemenschneider hit a two-run homer to left-center, pushing the Indiana State lead to 3-0 after the top-half of the third.
Wichita State didn't have a base runner reach third base until with two outs in the bottom of the third after
Macklin Hitz grounded out to second as Wright advanced from first to third. However,
Cacy Williams grounded out to second base to end the inning with Indiana State maintaining a 3-0 lead after three innings.
Rylee Holland singled and advanced to second on a high
Layne Greenlee throw to home plate, scoring both Klopp (earned) and Kassie Brown (unearned) to take a 5-0 lead.
Williams hit a two-run homer, but as she touched first base, she passed Greenlee on the base paths, which caused Williams to be ruled out on the play. Greenlee was still awarded home plate, so the Shockers cut the Sycamore lead to 5-1 after six innings.
Indiana State advances to face No. 1 Drake on Friday.
