WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State softball team defeated Tulsa by a score of 7-2 on Tuesday evening inside Wilkins Stadium. With the win, the Shockers improved to 22-19 as the Golden Hurricane fell to 23-15. Wichita State has also won six out of their last seven games.
Jenni Brooks picked up her seventh win of the season. She pitched three innings, allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits, walked one and struck out none. Kelsey Sterneker started the game, as she pitched three innings and allowed only one hit. Katie Malone pitched the final inning, which was scoreless.
Caitlin Sill took her ninth loss of the season as she pitched three innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits. She also walked three and struck out one.
Melanie Jaegers led the Shockers on Tuesday night as she went 2-2 with two doubles and three RBI. Brittany Fortner was 2-2 with a RBI, walk and run scored, as Mackenzie Wright was 0-2, but scored three runs.
Maggie Withee and Brittany Walker were each 1-3 to pace the Golden Hurricane. Kaitlin Allen was 1-2, and Catherine Horner was 0-2 with a RBI.
Wichita State got on the scoreboard with a Jaegers double in the bottom of the second, scoring Wright to give the Shockers a 1-0 lead after two innings.
In the bottom of the third, Fortner hit a line shot to first that bounced off of first base and into right field, scoring Spring to push the Shocker lead to 2-0 after three innings.
Macklin Hitz and Ashley Johnson both had extra base hits in the bottom of the fourth, while each of their hits produced runs. As Hitz doubled to left (that scored Wright) to extend the Shocker lead to 3-0, Johnson tripled to right, scoring Hitz to advance the Shocker lead to 4-0 after four innings.
The Hurricane scored their first run of the game in top of the fifth when Jodi Edmiston hit a RBI-groundout to short, scoring Walker to cut the Shocker lead to 4-1 after the top half of the fifth.
Wichita State answered with three runs of their own to extend the Shocker lead to 7-1 after the bottom of the fifth. Wright reached on a fielder's choice that was due to a fielding error by Allen, scoring Fortner from second to push Wichita State's lead to 6-1. Two batters later, Jaegers hit a two-RBI single that scored both Wright and Hunter Hogan (who pinch-ran for Liz Broyles), pushing their lead out to 7-1 after five innings.
Horner hit a sac fly to right, scoring Maggie Withee to cut the Shocker lead to 7-2 after the top of the sixth. Eventually, 7-2 would become the final score as the Shockers improved to 22-19 overall, as the Golden Hurricane dropped to 23-15.
Wichita State resumes their seven-game homestand when they face Oklahoma State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. inside Wilkins Stadium.
