SB: Shocks Take Fifth in a Row with 10-4 Win Over Nebraska

3/8/2015 7:32:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita State softball team defeated Nebraska, 10-4 on Sunday afternoon inside Wilkins Stadium to conclude the 2015 Shocker Invitational. With the win, Wichita State moves to 14-9 on the year as Nebraska dropped to 8-11. Sunday's win put the Shockers on a five game winning streak, as they have also won six out of seven, and seven out of nine.

Wichita State's 15 hits on Sunday is the second highest hit total of the season, as they had 16 against IPFW on February 14 in the Texas Classic in Austin. Over the weekend as a team, the Shockers scored 43 runs on 46 hits, while having 38 RBI. Wichita State scored 10 or more runs in three of their four games during the 2015 Shocker Invitational.

Jenni Brooks (4-4) picked up the victory. She pitched four innings and allowed a run (earned) on six hits, walked one and struck out four. Katie Malone picked up her second save of the season after pitching three innings in relief.

Emily Lockman (4-6) took the loss. She pitched all seven innings, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 15 hits, walked four and struck out two.

Brittany Fortner had a historic Sunday.

She went 4-5 with a three-run home run, four RBI and three runs scored. The Cedar Hill, Mo. native's four RBI against Nebraska marked the second game out of her last three in which she had four RBI. Fortner's four hits were the most in a game since Jamie Hull had four hits against Northern Illinois on February 26, 2011, and her three runs scored marked the third time a Shocker had scored three runs in one game during the 2015 season (Cacy Williams, Mackenzie Wright). Fortner was just a triple shy of the cycle, as she tied the school record for the most doubles in a game with two. Fortner's nine total bases were the most in one game since Kiersten Dixon had nine against Texas Southern on February 20, 2011.

Kelli Spring and Melanie Jaegers also had big Sundays. As Spring collected three hits, a RBI and a stolen base, Jaegers was 1-4 with a three-RBI double of her own. Ashley Johnson and Erin Carney each had two hits, as Wright, Liz Broyles and Williams also recorded a hit.

Alicia Armstrong went 3-3 with a three-run home run, three RBI and two runs scored to pace the Husker offense.

The Huskers scored the first run of the game when Laura Barrow singled to left, scoring Armstrong to take a 1-0 lead into the top of the third.

Wichita State answered the Nebraska bottom of the second with five runs on five hits in the top of the third, allowing the Shockers to take a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third.

A Fortner double began the Shocker rally, scoring Johnson to tie the game at one apiece with no outs. The Shockers scored the other four runs in the top of the third with two outs. Williams' hard-hit single to third scored Fortner to give the Shockers their first lead of the game at 2-1, and Jaegers' three-RBI double with the bases loaded pushed the Shocker lead to 5-1 heading into the bottom of the third.

A throwing error by Steph Pasquale of Nebraska during the top of the fourth allowed Fortner to score from third as Spring was stealing second, pushing the Shocker advantage to 6-1 after four innings.

Fortner's three-run home run expanded the Shocker lead to 9-1 at the top of the fifth, and put Wichita State within three outs of ending the game due to run-rule.

Katie Malone pitched in relief during the bottom of the fifth and was one strike away from giving the Shockers a 9-1 victory. Armstrong hit her three-run home run to deep center, extending the game while cutting the Shocker lead to 9-4 through five innings.

A Spring RBI-single to center scored Johnson from third, and gave the Shockers a 10-4 during the top of the seventh. This later became the final score after Malone pitched the bottom of the seventh without allowing a run.

Wichita State takes a quick road trip on Wednesday evening to face Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. at 6 p.m., before opening up Missouri Valley Conference play at home against Indiana State from March 14-15.
