WICHITA, Kan.—Wichita State's softball team fell to Drake during both games in their doubleheader on Saturday inside Wilkins Stadium. During game one, Wichita State lost to Drake by a 6-5 score and during game two, the Shockers fell to Drake, 4-1. With the two losses, the Shockers dropped to 16-18 overall (1-7 MVC) as Drake improved to 16-11 overall (7-1 MVC).
Brittany Fortner led the Shocker offense on Saturday, as she went 4-6 with two runs scored, two doubles, a home run, two RBI and nine total bases. Fortner also had a 1.500 slugging percentage and a .714 on-base percentage.
Cacy Williams also had a strong day, as she went 2-5 with two runs scored, two home runs, three RBI, eight total bases and a 1.600 slugging percentage. Her on-base percentage on Saturday was .400.

Game 1: Drake 6, Wichita State 5
Ashlynne Neil took her first loss of the season as she entered the game in relief of Katie Malone. She pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits, walked one and struck out two.
Rebekah Schmidt picked up her eighth win of the season for the Bulldogs. She pitched the entire game, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits, walked one and struck out six.
Cacy Williams and Brittany Fortner combined to produce all five RBI for the Shockers against Drake in game one. As Williams was 2-4 with two homers (her fifth and sixth of the season), three RBI and two runs scored, Fortner was 2-4 with her sixth homer of the season, a run scored and two RBI.
Haley Nybo paced the Bulldogs during game one as she went 2-4 with two runs scored, and a solo homer.
Williams began the bottom of the first with a leadoff solo homer (her fifth of the season) to deep right field, giving the Shockers a quick 1-0 lead.
Back-to-back walks in the top of the second loaded the bases with two outs, and Sarah Ryan at the plate. Malone eventually struck out Ryan looking to end the inning without allowing any runs, keeping the game at 1-0 in favor of the Shockers through the top-half of the second.
Mackenzie Wright was originally ruled out while attempting to steal second base during the bottom of the second, but the umpires later reversed the call and awarded Mackenzie Wright second base. A Jaegers single, and a stolen base during the Layne Greenlee at bat moments later, set up runners at second and third with one out. However, the Shockers were unable to score any runs, keeping the game at 1-0 Shockers through two innings.
Drake's Kelsey Wright hit a solo homer to deep left-center during the top of the third, tying the game at one apiece. Four batters later, Kailee Smith hit a chopper that bounced just over the head of Williams, scoring Nybo to take their first lead of the game at 2-1 after the top of the third.
Laura Brewer doubled to left, scoring Ryan to push the Drake lead to 3-1 during the top of the fourth. Moments later, Nybo reached on a Kelli Spring fielding error at shortstop, scoring Brewer to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead after the top of the fourth.
During the bottom of the fifth, Drake's Brewer committed two fielding errors—one as McKenzie Adams put the ball in play, and the other when Spring put the ball in play. After the error that allowed Adams to reach base, Williams hit her second homer of the game and her sixth of the season, a two-run homer that trimmed the Drake lead to 4-3. Moments after the Brewer error that allowed Spring to reach base, Fortner hit her sixth homer of the season, the second two-run homer of the inning, and gave the Shockers their first lead of the game at 5-4 heading into the last two innings.
Nybo hit the tying homer in the top of the seventh, tying the game at five apiece. Three batters later, Maddie Hooyman (who pinch-ran for Schmidt) scored after Megan Sowa (who pinch-hit for Ashlie Chambers) grounded out to Liz Broyles.
Fortner doubled with one out in the bottom of the seventh, and Mackenzie Wright was intentionally walked with two outs. With Paige Mason at the plate, Fortner represented the tying run and Mackenzie Wright represented the winning run. However, Schmidt struck out Mason swinging to end the game and to allow the Bulldogs to win game one, 6-5.
Game 2: Drake 4, Wichita State 1
Jenni Brooks took her eighth loss of the season. As she pitched a complete game, she allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits while walking five and striking out seven.
Nicole Newman of Drake picked up her eighth win of the season. As she also pitched a complete game, she allowed one run (unearned) on three this, walked two and struck out six.
Brittany Fortner went 2-2 with a run scored to pace the Shocker offense during game two. McKenzie Adams was the only other Shocker to record a hit, as she went 1-3.
Laura Brewer was 2-3 with two RBI, two homers, and two runs scored to lead the Bulldog offense.
Through the first three innings, Brooks and Newman combined to allow three hits—one for the Bulldogs, and two for the Shockers. During the top of the fourth, Laura Brewer hit a towering solo homer to center field, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Fortner doubled and advanced to third on a Liz Broyles groundout moments later. A hard-hit two-hopper by Mackenzie Wright to Drake's Tasha Alexander at shortstop bounced off of her glove, scoring Fortner to tie the game at one apiece.
During the top of the fifth, Kaitlyn Finneran reached after a throwing error by Macklin Hitz, scoring Maddie Hooyman to break the one all tie and to take a 2-1 lead. Four batters later, Kelsey Wright singled to center, scoring Finneran to increase their lead to 3-1 after the top half of the fifth.
The Bulldogs loaded the bases for the second straight inning in the top of the sixth, with McKinnon at the plate. Brooks then struck out McKinnon to keep Drake's lead at 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Brewer's second solo homer of the day, and her second of game two was hit in the top of the seventh when her second solo homer was hit three-quarters of the way up the left field foul pole. This extended the Bulldog lead to 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, which later became the final score.
The Shockers complete their three-game set with Drake on Sunday inside Wilkins Stadium at noon.
