WACO, Texas – The Wichita State softball team used a three-run bottom of the sixth inning to complete a come from behind, 9-8 win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi during the consolation game on Sunday at the Getterman Classic in Waco. Wichita State ends the Getterman Classic with a 3-2 record, while Texas A&M Corpus Christi drops to 0-5.

The Shockers were up 5-0 through the first three innings of the game. Texas A&M Corpus Christi scored three in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-3 before the Shockers answered with one of their own in the bottom of the fourth to push their lead to 6-3.

The Islanders scored two in the top of the fifth and three in the top of the sixth to claim the lead at 8-6, but the Shockers added three more in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead and win 9-8.

During Sunday morning's game, there were 17 runs scored on 24 hits, and the two teams committed four errors combined. Out of the 24 hits, the Shockers had 11 and the Islanders had 13. There was also a tie and three lead changes.

Both teams excelled with runners in scoring position. As Texas A&M Corpus Christi was 7-19 (.368) with runners on base, Wichita State was 5-11 (.455). Wichita State and Texas A&M Corpus Christi each had seven different players record a hit.

Out of the seven Shockers who earned a hit, four had multi-hit games (Cacy Williams, Mackenzie Wright, Layne Greenlee, Ashley Johnson). Texas A&M Corpus Christi had five of their seven players earn multi-hit games (Brittney Morse, Liz Carter, Jessica Mendez, Mickayla Cochran, and Hayley Galloway).

Brittany Fortner and Ashley Johnson of Wichita State were named to the 2015 Getterman Classic All-Tournament Team.

Fortner was 8-17 (.471) with six RBI, four doubles, a triple, a walk, and three runs scored. Johnson was 4-9 (.444), including four runs scored, and a RBI.

With Autumn Hollway of Stephen F. Austin on third and one out during the first of two games against the Lady Jacks on Saturday, Johnson made a crucial throw into home plate just before Holloway could break for home in an attempt to tie the game right after the second out was recorded in the top of the seventh.

Jenni Brooks (1-1) pitched the final two innings in relief to earn her first win of the season, giving up a run (unearned) on three hits with one strikeout.

Stephanie Flores (0-2) pitched the final five innings for the Islanders. She allowed four runs (all earned) on five hits, walked four and struck out three.

Wichita State's 1-3 hitters combined for five hits, six runs scored, three RBI and three doubles.

Cacy Williams went 2-3 with two doubles, a walk and three runs scored. Mackenzie Wright was 2-2 with a RBI and two runs scored, as Brittany Fortner was 1-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

Carter and Galloway led the Islanders on the offensive end. As Carter went 3-4 with a double, walk and a run scored, Galloway was 2-14 with a run scored, a triple, and three RBI.

The Sunday morning contest began with the Islanders threatening, as they had a bases loaded chance in the top of the first with one out. Katie Malone (who started the game for the Shockers) then struck out Mendez, and forced a groundout by Cosette Hernandez to end the inning without giving up any runs.

Malone's ability to escape the top of the first proved to be critical. In the bottom of the first, the Shockers sent 10 batters to the plate that scored five runs on six hits to take a quick 5-0 lead after just one inning.

Williams led off the bottom of the first with a loud double to left center. Moments later, Wright began the run-filled bottom of the first with a RBI-single to knock home Williams, and give the Shocks a 1-0 lead.

As Melanie Jaegers was at the plate, a successful double-steal attempt by Wright and Fortner gave the Shockers their second run, as Wright came around to score after Hernandez muffed the throw from Brittney Morse in an attempt to throw out Wright at third. On the throw, Fortner moved to third.

Soon after Wright scored from the Shockers' double-steal attempt, Jaegers had a RBI groundout that scored Fortner to push the Wichita State lead to 3-0.

Three batters later, Johnson had a RBI-single through the right side, scoring Erin Carney. Kelli Spring had the last of the RBI in the bottom of the first inning when she hit a RBI-single to score Greenlee.

The Islanders scored three in the top of the fourth on two hits to trim the Shocker lead to 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Galloway began the Islanders' rally when she put Stephen F. Austin on the board with a two-RBI triple.

Two batters later, Dani Tefft's RBI-single to third brought Galloway home and moved Texas A&M Corpus Christi to the 5-3 score. Neil was then called into action from the bullpen and got the last out of the top of the fourth with a groundout.

Williams stole home in the bottom of the fourth from a double steal attempt that saw Fortner get thrown out at second simultaneously. Wichita State was up 6-3 through four innings.

The Islanders threatened again in the top of the fifth with their second bases loaded chance with one-out, and with Cochran up at the plate. Unlike the top of the first, Texas A&M Corpus Christi capitalized with two runs to close the Shocker lead to just one run at 6-5.

Neil caused a ground ball force-out at home to get the second out. A Paige Mason fielding error at third allowed Jessica Mendez to score and cut the Shocker lead to 6-4. A Galloway RBI-single later scored Hernandez to the 6-5 Shocker lead after five innings.

The Islanders scored three to complete their comeback and take an 8-6 lead over the Shockers during the top of the sixth.

Mendez began the rally with a RBI single, scoring Morse, and tying the game at six apiece. Carter scored off of a Brooks wild pitch to give Texas A&M Corpus Christi their first lead of the game at 7-6. Cochran's RBI-single to center plated Mendez and pushed the Islanders' lead to 8-6 after the top of the sixth.

Wichita State answered with three of their own in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim the lead at 9-8. Fortner's two-RBI double to right tied the game, and Macklin Hitz's pinch-hit sacrifice fly was the go-ahead run that scored Wright.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Carter doubled to deep left over the head of Greenlee, giving the Islanders a chance to tie. Brooks then struck out Mendez to end the game and give the Shockers the win in a wild 9-8 finish.

The Shockers return to action when they play five games in three days from Feb. 13-15 at the Texas Classic in Austin, Texas.
