Box Score WACO, Texas –The Wichita State softball team lost against Stephen F. Austin by a score of 6-3 during the bracket play portion at the Getterman Classic in Waco on Saturday night. With the loss, the Shockers fall to 2-2 and the Lady Jacks improve to 2-2.
This was the second consecutive game that Wichita State played against Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, as the Shockers won 2-1 over the Jacks in round-robin play on Saturday morning.
The Shockers will now play the consolation game on Sunday against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 9:30 a.m. to conclude the Getterman Classic.
Katie Malone pitched three innings while giving up four hits, three runs (all earned), one walk and one strikeout. Jenni Brooks pitched the next 3.1 innings for the Shockers, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
Kelsey Sterneker threw the final two-thirds of the top of the seventh inning.
Callee Guffey pitched a complete game for the Lady Jacks. She gave up three runs (all earned) on three hits, allowed seven hits, one walk and had five strikeouts.
Melanie Jaegers and Kelli Spring each went 2-3, as Spring also had a run scored. Brittany Fortner went 1-4 with a triple, and two RBI.
Brittany Lewis of Stephen F. Austin went 3-4 with a RBI as Autumn Holloway went 1-3 with two RBI. Taylor Fraccastoro had two hits in four at bats, with a RBI and two runs scored.
The Lady Jacks scored their first run of the game when Heather Hollingswort reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Alisa Hamilton. Shalie Day doubled through the left side moments later, scoring Lindsay Campbell and giving the Jacks a 2-0 lead through three innings.
Stephen F. Austin added their third run in the top of the fourth when Fraccastoro homered to deep left center, stretching the Shocker deficit to 3-0.
Cacy Williams began a Shocker rally in the bottom of the fifth by reaching on a fielder's choice, but Jaegers was thrown out at home. Layne Greenlee continued to run after Jaegers was thrown out at home, and scored the first run of the game for the Shockers.
Fortner then hit the two-RBI double to deep right, scoring Williams and Spring to pull the Shockers even at three apiece after five innings.
The Lady Jacks had a bases loaded, no outs chance in the top of the sixth when Brooks induced a 1-2-3 double play to earn two outs while there were still runners on second and third.
One batter later, Stephen F. Austin eventually answered the Shockers' three-run bottom of the fifth inning with a two-RBI single by Autumn Holloway to reclaim the lead at 5-3 after the top of the sixth inning.
Stephen F. Austin added a run in the top of the seventh when Lewis had a RBI-single up the middle, scoring Hollingswort, and pushing their lead to 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh. This eventually became the final score.
On Sunday morning, Wichita State will face Texas A&M Corpus Christi for the second time to conclude the Getterman Classic at 9:30 a.m.
