WACO, Texas – The Wichita State softball team (1-0) won their 2015 opener against Texas A&M Corpus Christi (0-1) by a 3-2 score during the first of a Friday doubleheader at the Getterman Classic in Waco.
Katie Malone (1-0) pitched a complete game to give the Shockers the victory. She pitched seven innings, gave up four hits, two runs (all unearned), and had seven strikeouts.
Liz Carter also pitched a complete game for the Islanders. She pitched six innings, gave up six hits, three runs (all unearned), one walk, and had three strikeouts.
Brittany Fortner led the Shockers on offense. She went 2-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Paige Mason, Cacy Williams, Liz Broyles, and Macklin Hitz all had one hit apiece for Wichita State.
Dani Tefft was Texas A&M Corpus Christi's best offensive player against Wichita State as she went 2-4 with a run scored. Brittney Morse contributed as well, going 1-3 with a RBI.
Five total errors were committed in the game, including three by the Shockers and two by the Islanders.
Texas A&M Corpus Christi scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the third to take an early 2-0 advantage.
After Malone recorded the first two outs of the inning, the Islanders rallied for two (unearned) runs on three hits. Mickayla Cochran reached on an error by Ashley Johnson, scoring Mackinzee Griebel. Two batters later, Morse hit a RBI single that scored Tefft to give the Islanders the 2-0 lead.
The Shockers answered the Islanders rally with three of their own during the bottom of the third to take the 3-2 lead.
Fortner had a RBI single, scoring Johnson. Williams later scored the tying run after a wild pitch by Carter. Fortner later scored on Mason's RBI single, providing Wichita State with the 3-2 lead that became the final score.
After the top of the third inning, both pitchers found their rhythm and did not yield another run for the rest of the game. Carter and Malone only allowed one hit combined after the third inning.
The Shockers will play their second game of the Getterman Classic when they battle No. 10/11 Baylor at 3 p.m.
