LAKEWOOD, Calif. – The Wichita State softball team fell to Cal State Fullerton by a score of 10-0 in six innings during their second game on Thursday at the Long Beach State Louisville Slugger Tournament inside Mayfair Park. As the Shockers fell to 8-8 on the season, Cal State Fullerton improved to 10-7.
Jenni Brooks (3-4) took the loss. She gave up four runs (all earned) on three hits, and walked two without recording an out during the top of the first inning.
Christina Washington (5-2) picked up her fifth win of the season. She pitched all six innings and gave up just four hits, walked two and struck out four.
Kelli Spring, Brittany Fortner, Macklin Hitz and Ashley Johnson each recorded hits during the game.
Sarah Moore led the way for Cal State Fullerton when she went 4-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Samantha Galarza went 2-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
Cal State Fullerton scored four runs on four hits in the top of the first to take a 4-0 lead over the Shockers.
Missy Taukeiaho singled to left, scoring Rodriguez to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. Moore then hit a ground-rule double, scoring Delynn Rippy, and extending their lead to 2-0. Later in the inning, Taukeiaho scored on a Kelsey Sterneker illegal pitch, the second illegal pitch thrown by the Shockers in the top of the first, and pushing the Titans' lead to 3-0. After a Sydney Colenzo walk, Galaraza singled down the left field line, scoring Moore to give the Titans a 4-0 advantage. With Vandiver up with one out in the inning, Fortner's diving catch in shallow left set up an inning-ending double play, as she was able to get Colenzo out at second before she made it back to the base.
The Shockers had a bases loaded, two out run-scoring chance with Paige Mason at the plate during the bottom of the first. However, Mason struck out to end the rally and to keep the game at 4-0 in favor of the Titans through the end of the first inning.
Spring singled, and Broyles was hit by a pitch to start a potential Shocker rally in the bottom of the third. Hitz reached on a fielder's choice that forced Broyles out at second, and then Mason grounded to Washington to end the Shocker threat without scoring any runs.
Cal State Fullerton added six in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 10-0 over Wichita State, which was the final score.
The Shockers resume the Long Beach State Louisville Slugger Tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. when they face Stanford.
