NORMAL, Ill. -- Wichita State held off Illinois State, 46-41, Friday night behind 17 points from Alex Harden inside Redbird Arena.
WSU gave up the lead only one time on a Lindsay Smith jumper with 4:29 left in the game, then did not give up a point to re-gain the lead and win down the stretch.
The Shockers, on an off-shooting night, out-shot the Redbirds, 36.4 percent to 32.5 percent. WSU's effort included a 0-13 night from the three-point line, while ISU made three treys.
Bonner scored 12 points as WSU's only other double-figure scorer, while Michaela Dapprich had a career-high and team season-high 13 rebounds as the Shockers out-boarded ISU, 36-30.
Lindsay Smith led two double-figure Redbird scorers with 11 points and Octavia Crump had 11
rebounds for ISU.
In the second half, WSU earned its largest lead at the 16:13 mark on a Decker jumper, but ISU closed the gap to five points, then four at the 11:05 mark on Zenobia Bess' layup and free throw after a Jaleesa Chapel foul.
Illinois State then tied the game at 37 each at 6:49 on a three by Stewart that capped a 6-0 run that included three free throws by Lindsay Smith after she was fouled by Decker beyond the arc.
The two teams traded baskets before Lindsay Smith's jumper game the Redbirds a 41-39 lead at 4:29. The basket was the Redbirds' last score of the game as the Shocker defense turned up its intensity.
WSU tied it on a Bonner jumper and went ahead on a Jacobs layup at 2:27 to take a 43-41 lead.
Jacobs hit two free throws with 16.6 seconds left to put WSU up four before Bonner's free throw fashioned the final score, 46-41.
WSU opened the first half on a 6-2 run with three field goals by Harden, and entered the first media timeout with a 6-4 edge.
Harden scored the Shockers' first four buckets and five of the first six, including a and-one for a 13-6 lead at the 9:03 mark.
WSU extended the lead to 19-11at the 3:59 mark before back-to-back baskets by Illinois State closed the lead to 19-15 at 1:47.
A Harden layup with 12 seconds left gave her 13 points for the half to lead the Shockers and give WSU a 21-16 halftime lead.
In the first half, WSU out-shot the Redbirds, 37 percent (10-27) to 31.6 percent (6-19). WSU turned 14 ISU turnovers into nine points, but committed nine turnovers of its own.
The Shockers are next in action 2 p.m., Sunday afternoon at Southern Illinois.
