WBB: WSU Holds Off SIU, 69-61, Sunday

CARBONDALE, Ill.  --  Wichita State's Alex Harden scored 25 points to lead the Shockers (22-4, 13-1) to a 69-61 win at Southern Illinois Sunday afternoon.

Harden was backed by Jamillah Bonner's 15 points and Kelsey Jacobs' 12 points. Michaela Dapprich had nine points and Jaleesa Chapel scored eight in 29 minutes off the bench.

Two Salukis scored 16 points, Dyana Pierre and Rishonda Napier, to lead SIU.

WSU out-shot the Salukis, 52.5 percent (32-61) to 47.9 percent (23-48) for the game, and after leading by four at the half, out-scored SIU, 35-31, in the second half.

Harden ended the game needing 79 points to become the No. 1 career scorer in Shocker history.

Wichita State opened the second half with three buckets, including two by Jaleesa Chapel while SIU added a bucket and two free throws to their halftime score for a 40-34 WSU lead by the first media timeout.

SIU's Washington closed the led to three with a shot from the arc at the 14:56 mark, but Harden extended it to five with a driving layup for a 42-37 WSU lead and her 17th point of the game.

A 6-0 Shocker run capped by a Bonner driving layup from the left side after a steal at 12:47 caused SIU to use its fourth of five timeouts. After the timeout, WSU got the ball again and Bonner circled the lane for a layup on the right side for a 48-37 WSU  lead, its largest of the game. A Bonner and-one after another SIU turnover gave WSU a 51-37 lead.

SIU's Pierre scored five for the Salukis and then Napier caught fire to score 10-straight for SIU to close the gap, but back-to-back baskets for WSU to maintain the lead and then extend it to 10, 69-59, after two Bonner free throws at 2:23.

SIU scored two free throws over the next 2:23 as WSU took the 69-61 win.

In the first half, Wichita State and SIU changed leads eight times in the first 12 minutes with SIU's largest lead five points, 15-10, at the 14:48 mark and WSU's largest a four, 22-18,  at 9:42.

WSU went on a 14-0 run from 9:32 to 4:16 to take a 32-22 lead, with five different Shockers scoring.

Harden collected 15 of WSU's first 32 points, including four during the run.

SIU then went on an 8-0 run to close to within two points at 32-30 with a jumper and two-straight three-pointers, the second with 55 seconds left.

Jacobs completed the half with a layup with 13 seconds left and a last attempt by SIU bounced off the rim.

Harden finished the first half with the 15 points, while Dapprich backed her with seven and Jacobs with six. SIU's Washington and Giebelhausen led the Salukis with eight points each.

Both teams shot 50 percent in the first half, with WSU at 16-32 and SIU at 12-24. SIU made five treys to the Shockers' two, while the Shockers forced 10 Saluki turnovers.

Each team wore green in support of SIU's Donate Life Game to help raise awareness about organ donation. Two-time heart transplant recipient Sharon Clark sang the anthem prior to tip-off.

Wichita State is next in action at home Friday against Drake, which handed the Shockers their only MVC defeat earlier in the season, and Sunday on Senior Day against UNI in the final home games of the season.
