WBB: Shockers Defeat Pesky Ramblers, 64-55

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State improved to 19-4, 10-1, in the Missouri Valley, with a 64-55 win against Loyola Friday night in the Shockers' annual Pink Game.

A Shocker crowd of 2,322 turned out to support the fight against breast cancer by wearing pink, as did the hometown team. WSU's pink uniforms were auctioned off to raise funds for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund as a part of the Play4 Kay initiative.

Alex Harden scored 20 points for WSU and was backed by Michaela Dapprich's 17 points and Jamillah Bonner's 12 points. Fourteen of Dapprich's points came in the second half.

Loyola (4-19, 2-10) was led in scoring by Simone Law's 16 points. Sam Lambrigtsen had 15 and Taylor Manuel had 10.

LU out-shot WSU, 46.3 percent (19-41) to 40 percent (22-55), but the Shockers had the edge on the glass, 33-31, and the Ramblers committed 17 turnovers to WSU's 10. Thirteen of WSU's 22 buckets were on assists.

To open the second half, WSU extended the lead to nine on a Dapprich jumper, but Loyola went on a 7-0 run to close the gap to two, 30-28, at the 17:42 mark. Dapprich scored again for a 32-28 WSU lead, before both teams didn't score for three minutes when Bonner's jumper extended WSU's lead to six at 34-28.

The teams traded three baskets each for the next three minutes when Dapprich sank two free throws for a 40-35 WSU lead.

Bonner's layup right before the shot clock expired at the 10:11 mark gave WSU a 42-37 lead before Dapprich's layup at the 9:19 mark put WSU up seven.

A technical on the Loyola bench at the 9:10 mark after a Rambler offensive charge gave the Shockers a nine point lead after Decker sank the free throws. Jacobs' free throws 13 seconds later put WSU up 11, and a Decker steal on the inbounds play, and a Dapprich layup, gave the Shockers 50 points on a 12-2 run.

A Bonner trey from in front of the Shocker bench gave WSU a 14-point lead, 56-42, with 4:42 left and gave Bonner 12 points.

Loyola worked the margin to single digits at the 3:23 mark and again from the 2:@3 mark but WSU made its free throws down the stretch to hold off the Ramblers.

To start the game, the Shockers jumped out to a 14-3 lead with seven of the points coming from Harden with three jumpers and a free throw on an and-one at the 13:07 mark. Harden added a three-pointer at the 11:21 mark after two Loyola baskets to score her 10th point in the first nine minutes of play and give WSU a 17-6 lead.

The Shockers kept a steady 8-12 point lead over the next eight minutes of play. LU cut the lead to five at 24-19 with a Lambrigsten three-pointer at the 2:28 mark for a 5-0 Rambler run. Loyola cut the lead to five again in the final 17 seconds of the first half, but two Harden free throws gave WSU a 28-21 halftime lead.

Harden led WSU at the half with 12 points while Johnson and Lambrigtsen had seven each for LU. WSU out-shot the Ramblers, 37.9 percent (11-29) to 34.8 percent (8-23) in the first frame.

Wichita State is next in action 2 p.m., Sun., Feb. 15 against Bradley.
