WBB: Shockers Fall at Drake, 64-61, Sunday

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Wichita State (17-4, 8-1) fell, 64-61, at Drake (13-6, 9-0) Sunday afternoon inside the Knapp Center on the Campus of Drake University.

The win gave Drake the Missouri Valley Conference lead at the halfway mark in league play.

WSU was led in scoring by Michael Dapprich, who had 19 points, while Jamillah Bonner backed her with 17 points and Alex Harden had 11.

DU's Lizzy Wendell had 17 points to pace Drake, who had four in double-figures.

Drake out-shot the Shockers, 42 percent (21-50) to 35.8 percent (24-67) for the game and also out-boarded WSU, 41-35.

WSU took the lead again at the 9:19 mark of the second half on a Bonner three-pointer and out-scored the Bulldogs, 10-3, until a Drake layup cut the WSU lead back to three at 17:25.

DU took the lead back by the 16 minute media timeout, 38-37, on a Greiner trey at 15:25.

The lead changed as the teams traded baskets until Drake went on an 8-0 run to lead, 54-45 on a Granfell layup at 8:22. Dapprich closed the gap to six with a trey at 8:01, 54-48.

The Shockers went on a 14-0 run to take a seven-point lead, 61-54, the last bucket a jumper by Jacobs at 3:40.

Drake ended the game on a 8-0 run to take a 62-61 lead on a three-pointer by Becca Jonas, and sealed the win with two free throws with .7 seconds remaining by Maddy Dean to take the win.

To open the game, Wichita State and Drake traded baskets the first eight minutes until the Bulldogs went on an 8-2 run to take an eight point lead, 20-12, at the 8:34 mark.

WSU cut the lead back to four by the four, 23-19, minute media timeout at 3:47 on a 7-3 run.

WSU extended the run to 11-3 with a basket and two free throws from Michaela Dapprich by the 3:03 mark. Drake out-scored the Shockers over the next three minutes, 6-4, to take a 29-27 lead into the halftime locker room.

Dapprich led WSU scorers with 12 points, while DU's Wendell had 10 for the Bulldogs. Drake out-shot WSU 35.7 (9-24) to 28.1 (9-32) percent for the half.

WSU in next in action Sunday, Feb. 8, against Missouri State in Wichita.
