Shockers Advance with 3-1 Win Over K-State

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Wichita State volleyball team defeated Kansas State University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by scores of, 25-22, 17-25, 25-18 and 25-20.
 
The Shockers had a hitting percentage of .282 while the Wildcats hit, .238. Wichita State also had 71 kills while Kansas State only had 58 kills.
 
Wichita State was led by Abbie Lehman who had a team-high 20 kills, Emily Hiebert with a team-high 58 assists, and Dani Mostrom with 23 digs. Senior Katie Reilly also contributed 15 kills.
 
The Wildcats were led by Brooke Sassin who had 18 kills, while Katie Brand led the team with 45 assists.
 
The Shockers took an early 7-6 lead over the Wildcats on a kill by Shimen Fayad. Back-to-back errors by the Wildcats gave Wichita State a 9-6 lead.
 
A kill by Abbie Lehman pushed the Shocker lead to 12-9 in the first set, but a kill by Kansas State cut the lead to 12-11. Back-to-back kills by Lehman and Reilly pushed the Shocker lead to 16-12.
 
A kill by Kansas State cut the Shocker lead to 21-20 late in the first set, but back-to-back kills by Lehman gave Wichita State a 23-21 lead. Another kill by Lehman gave the Shockers a 25-22 victory in the first set.
 
Kansas State jumped out to an early 6-3 lead on a service ace by the Wildcats.
 
A kill by Emily Hiebert and a hitting error by the Wildcats tied the game at 6. Another kill by Reilly gave the Shockers their first lead of the set, 9-8.
 
Both teams traded points for a stretch until Kansas State pushed their lead to 17-14. Back-to-back kills by Kansas State gave the Wildcats a 25-17 win in the second set.
 
After the Shockers jumped out to an early 6-3 lead, the Wildcats quickly cut the lead to 6-5, but a kill by Lehman and then a block by Lehman and Mikaela Raudsepp pushed the Shocker lead to 10-7.
 
A 5-0 run by the Shockers pushed their lead to 18-11 over the Wildcats. After both teams trade points, a kill by Lehman gave the Shockers a 25-18 victory over the Wildcats in the third set.
 
To begin the fourth set, both teams traded points until kills by Jody Larson and Raudsepp gave the Shockers an 8-5 lead. After the Wildcats cut the lead to 13-12, the Shockers score two straight points to push the lead to 15-12.
 
Two kills by senior Katie Reilly gave the Shockers a 25-20 victory in the fourth set and a 3-1 victory in the match.
 
The Shockers will be in action again tomorrow, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m., as they take on either Harvard or Nebraska in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
