Photo GalleryLINCOLN, Neb. – The Wichita State Volleyball team fell in three sets to No. 4 Nebraska by scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-14 in the second round of the NCAA tournament at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Saturday night.
The Cornhuskers outhit the Shockers with a hitting percentage of .347 while Wichita State hit .225. Nebraska also had 51 kills and Wichita State had 35 kills. Wichita State had zero service aces while Nebraska had six.
The Shockers were led by Senior
Katie Reilly who had 11 kills on 18 attempts for a hitting percentage of .556.
Emily Hiebert also contributed with a team-high 32 assists.
The Cornhuskers were lead by Mikaela Foecke who had a game-high 12 kills on 20 attempts for a hitting percentage of .600. Hunter Kelly also was a big contributor with four kills and 38 assists.
To begin the first set of the night, the Shockers took an early 3-1 lead which was quickly erased as Nebraska fought back to take a 10-6 lead.
A kill by
Jody Larson gave cut the Cornhuskers lead to 14-12 but a kill by Nebraska pushed their lead back to three at 15-12.
After two straight kills by Nebraska and an error from Wichita State, the Cornhuskers push their lead to 20-14.
Kills by both
Abbie Lehman and
Shimen Fayad cut the lead to 23-18 late in the first set, but a kill by the Cornhuskers gave Nebraska a 25-19 victory in the first set.
Early in the second set, Nebraska jumped out to a 6-3 lead, but a kill by Lehman cut the lead to 6-4.
Three straight points by the Shockers tied the game at 8, but Nebraska quickly pushed the lead back to 11-8.
Back-to-back kills by Nebraska pushed their lead to 19-13.
After two straight points by the Shockers, the Cornhuskers quickly score two points to win the second set, 25-19.
Nebraska came out strong in the third set jumping out to a 6-3 lead but a kill by
Katie Reilly and an error by the Cornhuskers cut the lead to 6-5.
A 5-1 run by the Cornhuskers made the score 11-6.
Two straight kills by Nebraska made the lead 18-10 late in the third set.
Back-to-back kills by the Cornhuskers gave Nebraska a 25-14 victory in set three and a 3-0 victory in the match.
The Shockers end their season with a record of 27-9.
