Press ConferenceWICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State women's basketball team fell to the No. 15/16 Tennessee Lady Volunteers, 58-51, Friday night at Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers out-shot the Lady Volunteers, shooting 39.6 percent from the field, while Tennessee shot 38.9 percent. The Shockers were outrebounded, 37-29, but had 13 steals while Tennessee had just nine.
Wichita State was led by both
TaQuandra Mike and
Diamond Lockhart who both had 11 points. Both Mike and
Jaleesa Chapel also contributed six rebounds.
Tennessee was led by Bashaara Graves who had 18 points and 13 rebounds. Andraya Carter also contributed 14 points, going 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
The Lady Volunteers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but a 5-0 run by the Shockers gave the Shockers their first lead of the game, 5-4.
After two straight layups by the Lady Volunteers,
TaQuandra Mike knocked down a three-pointer to bring the Shockers within three, 13-10. Four straight free throws by Tennessee made the score, 17-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Back-to-back steals and a three-pointer by
Marija Pacar gave the Shockers a 20-19 lead in the second quarter. After two straight baskets by the Lady Volunteers, a three-pointer by Chapel tied the game at 23 to end the first half.
Early in the second half, Lockhart knocked down a three-pointer to take a 26-25 lead, but a quick 4-0 run by the Lady Volunteers gave Tennessee a 29-26 lead.
After an 8-0 run by the Lady Volunteers, the Shockers went on a 6-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to one, 40-39 at the end of the third quarter.
Two free throws by
Aundra Stovall gave the Shockers a 41-40 lead to begin the fourth quarter but a steal and a layup by the Lady Volunteers tied the game at 44 with 6:37 to play in the game.
Tennessee took a 50-46 but a layup and a free throw by
Rangie Bessard cut the lead to 50-49. Six straight free throws gave Tennessee the win, 58-51.
Wichita State will be in action again on Tuesday, Dec. 15 as the Shockers host Eastern Washington at 7:05 p.m.
