Shockers Fall to Eastern Washington, 67-62

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State women's basketball team fell to Eastern Washington by a score of 67-62 on Tuesday night in Charles Koch Arena.

Wichita State created 18 turnovers while they only turned the ball over nine times, but the Eagles shot 46% from the field, while the Shockers only shot 37.5%.

The Shockers were led by TaQuandra Mike who had 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Rangie Bessard also contributed with 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Eagles were led by Hayley Hodgins who had 23 points and shot 7-for-15 from the field and 3-for-6 from the three-point line. Delaney Hodgins led the Eagles with 12 rebounds.

After a layup by Chapel gave the Shockers a 2-0 lead, Eastern Washington went on an 8-0 run to take the early lead. The Eagles pushed their lead to 20-13, but Wichita State rallied a comeback to cut Eastern Washington's lead to 21-19 at the end of the first quarter.

To start the second quarter, Eastern Washington went on a 7-0 run, but after two straight baskets by Mike and a three pointer by Rangie Bessard, the game was tied at 36. A three-pointer gave the Eagles a 39-36 lead at the half.

The Eagles came out strong in the second half with an 11-4 run. By the end of the third quarter, Eastern Washington had pushed its lead to 56-44.

A quick 9-0 run by the Shockers to start the fourth quarter cut the Eagles lead to three, 56-53, but Eastern Washington quickly pushed the lead back to six, 61-55. A big three-pointer by Mike, cut the lead to three, 65-62 with 8.2 seconds left in the game.

Two free throws by Eastern Washington put the game out of reach for a final score of, 67-62.

The Shockers will be in action again on Friday, Dec. 18, as the Shockers host their annual Shocker Winter Classic. Wichita State will play Prairie View A&M at 7:05 p.m. in Charles Koch Arena.
