Press ConferenceWICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State volleyball team defeated Drake 3-1 on Friday night inside Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers won by scores of 25-22, 22-25, 25-15 and 25-17. With the win, the Shocks have now won 20 or more matches in 13 consecutive seasons.
Abbie Lehman led the Wichita State attack with 14 kills on her way to a .500 hitting percentage.
Mikaela Raudsepp added 13 kills in the Shocker victory.
Emily Hiebert added 38 assists and 11 digs while
Dani Mostrom contributed 16 digs.
Lehman got the Shockers on the board with a kill that tied the first set at one. Drake controlled the first set early, but a block by
Shimen Fayad cut their lead to 10-7. A kill by Raudsepp tied the match at 12 and, later, an ace by Fyfe gave the Shockers their first lead of the set 14-13. Two consecutive points by Wichita State put the home team up 20-18 and forced the visiting Bulldogs to take a timeout. The Shockers went up by as many as three before Drake pulled within one, 23-22, to force Wichita State to take its first timeout of the set. The Shockers then scored the next two points to win the first set 25-22.
Drake jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the second set. The Shockers didn't go away however and a Larson kill gave Wichita State a 10-9 lead. The Bulldogs then rattled off four consecutive points to take a 13-10 lead and forced the Shockers to take a timeout. Wichita State went down by as many as six before back-to-back points by the Shockers forced Drake to take a timeout and two consecutive aces by Hiebert cut the Bulldog lead to 22-20. Drake wouldn't falter though and went on to win the second set 25-22.
The Shockers jumped out to a 3-1 lead early in the third set. An ace from
MaryAshton Floyd stretched the lead to 6-3 Wichita State. Later, with Reilly serving, the Shockers connected on four-straight points to pull ahead 16-9. Wichita State did not lay off the throttle and forced the Bulldogs to take a timeout when the lead ballooned to 18-10. Four straight kills by Raudsepp sealed the set for the Shockers and they went on to win 25-15 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Wichita State took a 7-2 lead in the fourth set to force an early Drake timeout. After the Bulldogs scored on back-to-back plays, Lehman's kill put the Shockers back up four, 8-4. Later in the set, three-straight kills by Wichita State, including two by Raudsepp, put the lead at 16-8 Shockers. Wichita State controlled the set the rest of the way and won 25-17.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Nov. 7 against UNI at 7 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
