Box Score (PDF)CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois won a thrilling five-set match over Wichita State. The Salukis won by scores of 28-26, 26-28, 25-20, 22-25 and 15-10.
Mikaela Raudsepp led the Shockers with 17 kills, while
Emily Hiebert had 46 assists and
Dani Mostrom had 18 digs.
The Salukis jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first set, but the Shockers slowly chipped away and tied the game at 17 on a service ace by
McKenzie Fyfe. The two teams traded points until kills from
Shimen Fayad and
Abbie Lehman gave the Shocks a 22-20 lead. The Salukis tied at 23 on a Shocker error and took a 24-23 lead with a block. The Shockers fought off three set points with kills from
Katie Reilly, but SIU won the set 28-26.
The second set went back and forth until the Shocks went up 15-12 on a kill by Fayad. A block by Lehman increased the lead to 18-13, but the Salukis used a 6-0 run to take a 22-21 lead. A kill by
Katy Dudzinski tied it at 22 and a Reilly kill brought the Shockers to set point at 25-24. WSU used kills from Reilly and
Jody Larson to win the set 28-26.
The Shockers used a block from Larson and Dudzinski to go in front 9-7 in the third set. SIU used a 6-0 run to take a 21-16 lead, but a kill from Raudsepp and a block by Fayad pulled WSU to within 21-18. WSU got no closer than three the rest of the way as SIU won the set 25-20.
SIU took a 9-5 lead in the fourth set and increased it to 13-9 with two-straight kills. WSU pulled to within 14-13 on a kill by Raudsepp and tied the score at 14 after a Saluki hitting error. Another kill from Raudsepp put the Shocks up 15-4, but the set went back and forth until WSU took a 22-19 lead on a service ace from Hiebert. WSU closed out the set 25-22 on a kill by Raudsepp.
SIU grabbed a quick 4-1 lead in the fifth set. The Shockers answered with three-straight to tie it at four. A block by Reilly and Fayad gave WSU a 7-6 lead, but SIU answered with two-straight to take an 8-7 lead. A block put the Salukis up 10-8 and SIU went on to win the set 15-10.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Nov. 6 when they host Drake at 7 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
