TULSA, Okla. – Cacy Williams went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored but the Wichita State softball team fell to Tulsa, 9-3, Tuesday night.
Paige Luellen hit .666 (2-for-3) on the day with a RBI, while Melanie Jaegers went 1-for-3 with a double in the loss. The Shockers fell to 20-13 on the season and 6-3 on the road as Tulsa climbed to 33-3 and 14-0 at home.
Williams hit a leadoff home run to right center to give the Shockers an early 1-0 lead in the first. Williams' run was the first home run given up by the Tulsa defense in nine games and the first run in four games.
The Hurricane responded in the bottom of the inning with three-straight singles to tie the game, 1-1. Tulsa loaded the bases on a fielder's choice, threatening to score again but then grounded into a double play before Jenni Brooks retired the next batter to get Wichita State out of the inning.
Williams drew a walk and Broyles reached on a hit by pitch before Luellen singled down the left field line to score Williams and give the Shockers a 2-1 advantage in the third.
Tulsa used a six-run third inning, highlighted by a leadoff home run to right center and a slew of singles to take its first lead of the game, 7-2.
The Hurricane added another in the fourth on a triple to right field to take an 8-2 lead.
Wichita State drew three walks to start the sixth before Williams hit a single to left field, cutting the Tulsa lead, 8-3 but it wasn't enough as the Shockers fell to the Hurricane, 9-3.
Jenni Brooks (2-1) picked up the loss for Wichita State, allowing seven hits and seven runs in 2.2 innings.
Wichita State will host Kansas Wed., April 2 with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at Wilkins Stadium.
