ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 63 Wichita State defeated the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) 4-1 on Monday inside the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington. With Monday's win, the Shockers moved to 12-7 and won two of their three matches during their three-match state of Texas road trip, with their only loss being to No. 8 Texas last Wednesday. UTA fell to 5-10 on the year.
Doubles play began when Tomislav Gregurovic/Tin Ostojic defeated No. 55 Javier Perez/Carlos Arbiza 8-0 at No. 1 doubles to give them their second win in a row over a nationally ranked doubles team.
Ilija Cuic/Jocelyn Devilliers clinched the doubles point and the 1-0 dual-match lead after beating the team of Marek Pesicka/Mario Muniesa at No. 2 doubles.
Ostojic (No. 20 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Central Singles Rankings) won 6-1, 6-4 against Arbiza at No. 2 singles to give the Shockers a 2-0 dual-match lead. Guillermo de Vilchez defeated Daniel Echevery 6-2, 6-2 at No 5 singles to move the Shocker lead to 3-0.
In the No. 6 singles slot, Francesco Migliano defeated Ibian Hodgson 6-4, 6-3 that gave UTA their only point of the day and cut No. 63 Wichita State's lead to 3-1. Guillermo Nicol clinched the match when he won 7-6, 6-3 in his match against Muniesa at No. 4 singles to give the Shockers their 4-1 dual-match win.
Shocker men's tennis head coach Brad Louderback saw many bright spots from his team in their match against UTA.
“We won at No. 1 doubles against a ranked doubles opponent for the second match in a row, so there were some definite bright spots,” Louderback said. “While there were a lot of bright spots, there's going to be some things we need to work on from this match. I was really proud of Nicol clinching the match against UTA today.”
The next time the Shockers are in action will be in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 30 inside the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex at WSU's campus in Wichita. No. 63 Wichita State competes against McPherson at 10 a.m. and Northwest Missouri State at 2 p.m.
