SB: Shocks Fall in Extra Innings

OMAHA, Neb. – The Wichita State softball team put together a two-run rally in the seventh inning, tying the game, 4-4, but it was not enough as the Omaha Mavs used a walk-off single to defeat the Shockers, 5-4 in eight innings Tuesday at Westside Field.

Omaha used a four-run second inning, highlighted by a three-run homer to left field, to take a 4-0 lead over Wichita State.

Sloan Anderson relieved Katie Malone in the bottom of the second inning after Malone allowed four hits and four runs in 1.1 innings.

Melanie Jaegers hit a double down the left field line, putting the Shockers in scoring position in the fifth inning before Liz Broyles hit a home run to right center – her third on the year – to cut the Mavericks' lead, 2-4.

Wichita State tied the game, 4-4, in the top of the seventh on a RBI single by Broyles and a SAC groundout by Luellen scored another to take the Shockers into the bottom of the inning. The Wichita State defense backed up the pitching staff in the seventh to put the game in extra innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Mavericks loaded the bases off of a single, a walk and a double to center field before Amber Lutmer hit a walk-off single to get the 5-4 victory over the Shockers.

Liz Broyles and Melanie Jaegers hit .500 (2-for-4) on the day, while Paige Luellen went 1-for-3 in the loss. Anderson (6-8) took the loss for Wichita State after pitching six innings, allowing eight hits and one run, striking out four batters.

The Shockers will take on former MVC foe Creighton Wed., March 19 with the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
