MBB: Big First Half Helps Shockers Rout Newman

WICHITA, Kan.- Ron Baker, Darius Carter and Fred VanVleet each scored in double figures to lead the Wichita State men's basketball team past Newman 105-57 on Sunday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.

Baker, Carter and VanVleet scored 18, 15, and 12 points respectively, to lead the offense for Wichita State, with Baker shooting 4-of-6 from behind the three-point line. Of the 15 different Shockers that played in the contest, 13 scored.

WSU connected on 10-of-17 three point attemps in the first half to build a 34-point lead at the break. The Shockers 67 points in the opening 20 minutes was just three shy of the school record for points in a half and equaled their highest output since the 1987-88 season, when they pinned 67 on Bradley.

The Shockers' 105 total points is the largest single-game total in eight seasons under Gregg Marshall. WSU's 102 points in its Dec. 19, 2011 meeting with this same Newman team, marked the only previous time in the Marshall Era that WSU had topped 100 points.

Baker got the Shockers started on the offensive end, hitting a three-pointer 15 seconds into the game and then connecting on another shot from long distance to make the score 6-4 Wichita State in the early going.  The Jets were not shy from three-point land early either, as they hit 3-of-4 from behind the arc in the first four minutes of the game. The Shockers took a 14-10 lead into the first media timeout.

Rashard Kelly stretched the Shocker lead to 18-10 when he grabbed a rebound off a missed jumper and put in a layup at the 14:12 mark.

Three minutes later Shaquille Morris connected on a put-back of his own, grabbing a rebound off a missed free-throw and slamming it home to put Wichita State up, 24-13. Darius Carter then completed back-to-back old-fashioned three-point plays to stretch the Shocker lead to 10, 32-22, with less than nine minutes remaining in the half.

Ria'n Holland got on the scoreboard for Wichita State, hitting a three-pointer from the left corner to force a Newman timeout at the 6:07 mark and put the Shockers up 46-26.

The Shockers closed the half on 18-2 run to take a 67-33 advantage into the locker room. Baker led the scoring for Wichita State, hitting 4-of-5 three-pointers on his way to 16 first-half points. Darius Carter added 13 points and three rebounds. The Shockers shot 22-for-36 (.611) in the first 20 minutes, including 10-for-17 (.588) from behind the arc, and held the Jets to 11-for-27 (.407) from the field. Wichita State won the rebounding battle 24-15 and outscored Newman 24-6 in the paint.

VanVleet started the second half with a three-point play and scored seven points in the first four minutes of the half, capped by a two-point jumper at the 16:42 mark to give the Shockers a 40-point advantage, 78-38.

Wichita State continued to push the Jets, going deep into its bench for the rest of the game. Tevin Glass gave the Shockers their biggest lead of the game with a jumper at the 5:17 mark that put his team up 98-47. Glass then put Wichita State at the century mark a couple possessions later with another jumper.

Jared Walker scored his first points as a Shocker, nailing a shot with nine seconds remaining to give Wichita State its final advantage, 105-57.

The Shockers shot 35-for-67 (.522) from the floor for the game and held Newman to 17-for-53 (.321) shooting. They out-scored the Jets 48-12 in the paint, won the rebounding battle 57-27, and out-scored the Newman bench 47-14.

Wichita State will next be in action on Sat., Nov. 29 when they take on Tulsa inside Charles Koch Arena at 2 p.m. The game will be aired on Cox Channel Kansas (Ch. 22).
