WICHITA, Kan.- Fred VanVleet dished out a career high 10 assists, adding six points and seven rebounds as the Wichita State men's basketball team defeated Illinois State, 66-47, in Charles Koch Arena Wednesday night.

Ron Baker and Cleanthony Early led all Shockers with 11 points apiece, while Tekele Cotton and Chadrack Lufile each contributed eight points. The Shockers shot 41 percent (23-for-56) from the field and 40 percent (9-for-22) from three-point range, forcing 15 Redbird turnovers.

Wichita State (16-0, 3-0) held Illinois State (8-7, 1-2) to 33 percent (18-for-55) from the field and 27 percent (7-for-26) from behind the arc. The Shockers outrebounded the Redbirds 44-37 and were dominate in the paint, outscoring Illinois State 26-14.  

Cleanthony Early opened up the scoring for Wichita State, hitting back-to-back threes to put the Shockers up 6-3 at the 17:23 mark. Darius Carter nailed a jumper in the paint two minutes later to make the score 9-5 Wichita State.

Ron Baker hit a long three-pointer with 11:35 remaining in the first half to put the Shockers ahead 17-12.

Baker and Tekele Cotton hit back-to-back shots from three-point range to stretch the Wichita State lead to 29-16, and a pair of Baker free throws capped 17-4 run over seven plus minutes for the Shockers and put them up 31-14 with 4:14 remaining in the half.

An alley-oop by Kadeem Coleby from Fred VanVleet with just over two minutes left gave Wichita State a 35-21 lead, and they would go into the locker room up 37-24.

Wichita State shot 13-for-30 (.433) in the first 20 minutes, including 6-for-13 (.462) from three-point land. Baker led all scorers with 11 points, while going 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Early added eight points and three rebounds for the Shockers.

Two consecutive layups by Chadrack Lufile, both off assists from VanVleet, started the second half for the Shockers and forced the Redbirds to take a timeout just two minutes into the half.

Nick Wiggins hit his first bucket of the game at the 13:57 mark with a three-pointer that put Wichita State up 49-27. Wiggins then made the next basket for the Shockers with a dunk off a pass from Baker.

Coleby connect on two free throws with 8:31 remaining in the game, two minutes later, VanVleet hit two more from the line to put Wichita State up 24, 59-35. Wichita State never let the lead dip below 16 the rest of the way.

The Shockers travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on Missouri State Saturday at 7 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN3.
