PORTLAND, Ore. – Wichita State used 16 blocks to sweep Portland in the Portland NIKE Invitational. The Shockers (4-1) won by scores of 25-11, 33-31 and 25-23.

Sam Sanders had 10 kills and hit .562, while Elizabeth Field had 10 kills and hit .438. Chelsey Feekin had six kills, 34 assists and 12 digs and Ashley Andrade had nine kills and eight blocks.

WSU used a 5-0 run to take a 10-3 lead in the first set. Back-to-back kills from Elizabeth Field increased the lead to 13-5 and the Shocks cruised to the 25-11 win.

The second set went back-and-forth from beginning to end. Portland took a three-point lead at 16-13, but the Shockers finally came back to tie it at 22. WSU fought off six set points down the stretch and won the set 33-31 on a block by Katie Reilly.

WSU took a 1-0 lead on a kill from Field in the third set, but would not lead again until late in the set. The Pilots had a six-point lead as late as 17-11, but the Shockers kept chipping away and tied it at 20 on a solo block from Katie Reilly. A kill from Ashlyn Driskill finally gave the Shockers the lead at 23-22 and WSU scored two of the final three points for a 25-23 win.

The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Sept. 7 against Fresno State at 7 p.m.
