Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Wichita State finished the match on a 9-0 run to defeat Utah State in five sets in the Portland NIKE Invitational. The Shockers (3-1) won by scores of 23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 24-26 and 15-7.
Ashley Andrade led the Shockers with 16 kills and hit .464, while Elizabeth Field added 12 kills. Chelsey Feekin had 12 kills and 45 assists and hit .706, while Jordan Hinkle had 15 digs.
The first set was a back-and-forth battle. The Shockers did not grab the lead until a Sam Sanders kill put the Shocks in front 12-11. The Aggies came back to take a 15-14 lead, but the Shockers answered with kills from Chelsey Feekin and Ashley Andrade to go in front 19-16. USU tied it at 20 and then outscored the Shockers 5-3 down the stretch to win 25-23.
The Aggies grabbed an early 3-1 lead in the second set, but the Shockers used two kills from Feekin and one from Elizabeth Field to take a 9-6 lead. USU tied it at 10 with a service ace, but the Shockers used two kills from Andrade, an Aggie hitting error and a Dani Mostrom service ace to take a 14-10 lead. The Shocks went on to win the set 25-17.
Utah State used back-to-back kills to go in front 5-3 in the third set. The Shockers used a 3-0 run to take a 6-5 lead and used a 4-0 run to increase the lead to 10-6. The Aggies tied it at 14 and again at 15, but the Shockers closed the set on a 10-4 run to win the set 25-19.
The Aggies took advantage of Shocker errors in the fourth set to cruise to a 13-5 lead. WSU started chipping away and pulled to within 14-11 on a service ace from Feekin. USU answered with a 6-1 run to take a 20-12 lead, but WSU used a 9-1 run including four kills from Ashlyn Driskill to tie the score at 21. WSU reached match point at 24-23, but USU closed out the match with three-straight points to win 26-24.
An Aggie service ace gave Utah State a 6-4 lead in the fifth set, but kills from Andrade and Sanders tied the score at six. After an Aggie kill made the score 7-6, the Shockers finished the set on a 9-0 run to win 15-7.
The Shockers are next in action tonight at 9:30 p.m. against Portland.
