VB: Shockers Fall to Italian National Team

WICHITA, Kan. – The Italian National Team defeated Wichita State in five sets in an exhibition match. Italy won by scores of 20-22, 21-16, 21-10, 21-15 and 20-22.

Jaclyn Roddy led the Shockers with 12 kills, while Elizabeth Field had eight kills and hit .667. Chelsey Feekin had eight kills and 42 assists, while Dani Mostrom had 10 digs.

The first set went back-and-forth with neither team having more than a three-point lead. The Shockers scored two-straight after it was tied at 18 for a 20-18 lead, but the Italians answered with two-straight to tie it at 20. A kill by Feekin and an Italian hitting error gave the Shockers the 22-20 win.

The Italians raced out to a 9-2 lead in the second set. The Shockers used a 4-0 run to pull within 15-9, but the Italians closed out the set with a 21-16 win.

Italy jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the third set and increased the lead to 15-6. The Italians won the set 21-10.

A kill from Feekin gave WSU a 6-5 lead in the fourth set, but the Italians scored two-straight to take a 7-5 lead. The set went back-and-forth until Italy used a 5-0 run to take a 17-12 lead. Italy won the set 21-15.

The Shockers raced out to a 5-0 lead in the fifth set behind the serving of Katie Reilly.  The Italians used a 5-0 run to tie the score at seven and the teams traded points until Italy took a 14-12 lead. The Shockers tied it at 14 on a service ace from Mostrom and took a 16-15 lead on a kill from Feekin. A kill from Hannah Eakin increased the lead to 18-16, but Italy came back to tie it at 18. With the score tied at 20, Reilly's kill MaryAshton Floyd's kill gave the Shocks a 22-20 win.

The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Oct. 4 when they host Southern Illinois at 7 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
