LINCOLN, Neb.- The Wichita State women's tennis team fell 5-0 to No. 16 Nebraska on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Nebraska Varsity Courts.
The Shockers fell behind early when Mary Weatherholt and Patrcia Veresova defeated Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova, 8-5, and Stefanie Weinstein and Janine Weinreich defeated Carla Venticinque and Rebecca Pedrazzi, 8-6 to put the Cornhuskers up 1-0.
In singles play, Nebraska grabbed wins at the No. 6 and 1 positions before Veresova defeated Julia Schiller, 6-1, 6-3 to clinch the match. The Cornhuskers will play No. 57 UNLV on Saturday after the Rebels upset No. 27 Tulsa in Friday's first match.
Despite ending the season with a loss, head coach Colin Foster is still proud of his team.
“Our program is getting stronger,” Foster said. “Nebraska has four seniors at the top four spots that are very good, very experienced, and throughout the lineup we pushed them.”
“We were playing very well at the top and bottom, unfortunately we were just unable to get any wins. I am proud of the way we played not only today, but all season.”
The Shocker women, Missouri Valley Conference Champions for the fifth straight season, ended the year with a record of 15-11.
