CARBONDALE, Ill. – Wichita State picked up a victory Sunday over Southern Illinois, 6-2, in the series finale from Carbondale.
Brianne Bond led the way at the plate with her eighth multi-RBI game of the season and third three-RBI game of the season. Katie Armagost gave up two earned runs in 4.2 innings of work to earn the win in the circle for the Shockers.
A day after falling behind early in both of Saturday's games the Shockers (15-20, 6-5) scored the first five runs of the game beginning with a two-run double in the second inning from junior Molly Baker.
An inning later Bond's two-run single plated Ali Vandever and Erin Carney to give WSU a 4-0 lead. Bond added another RBI in the fifth on a fielder's choice scoring Carney from third base.
After Southern Illinois (16-19, 4-6) scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run double from Meredith Wilson the Shockers answered with an RBI double off the bat of freshman Brittany Fortner scored Hayley Temple.
Sloan Anderson relieved Armagost throwing the final 2.1 innings to pick up her second save of the season.
The Shockers 6-5 start in MVC play is its best 11-game conference start since beginning the 2008 season 7-4.
Wichita State will continue its seven-game road trip Wednesday at Oklahoma State (7 p.m.) for one game before heading to Northern Iowa for a three-game conference series in Cedar Falls, Iowa Apr. 9-10.
