WICHITA, Kan. – Illinois State scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to break open a tightly contested rubber match Sunday afternoon defeating Wichita State 7-3 at Wilkins Stadium.
The Redbirds were the first team on the scoreboard for the third game in the series plating three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Stephanie Music's bases-clearing single to centerfield did all of the damage in the inning. Jhavon Hamilton and Laura Canopy both scored easily on the play. Elizabeth Kay scored all the way from first after the ball was misplayed in centerfield.
Wichita State answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning getting a RBI single from freshman Brittany Fortner followed by Abby Furstenberg scoring on an error by the Redbirds' Brittny Drish.
Hayley Temple tied the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the fourth with her second home run of the season.
Wichita State was undone by the long ball in the last few innings as Hamilton and Drish each hit two-run home runs to left in the sixth and seventh inning respectively to put the Redbirds up 7-3.
Temple finished the day 2-for-3 and was the only Shocker with multiple hits in the game.
Wichita State will continue its 10-game home stand Wednesday in the annual “Strike Out Breast Cancer” Pink Game doubleheader against Missouri State at 4 p.m.
