WICHITA, Kan. -
Wichita State won the series rubber-match with Indiana State, 6-3, Sunday
afternoon to take the Missouri Valley Conference opening series for both teams.
The Shockers carried the momentum from a walk-off win in
game two of Saturday's doubleheader into Sundays series deciding contest
jumping on Indiana State starter Stephanie Fougerousse in the first inning
getting a bases-clearing double down the left field line from sophomore Brianne
Bond to take a 3-0 lead. Melanie Jaegers, Laura Vickers and Erin Carney all
scored on the play.
Indiana State (10-15, 1-2) got a run back in the top of the
third inning when Melanie Jaegers throw down to second base found its way into
centerfield allowing Morgan Allee to score from third base.
Wichita State (11-14, 2-1) answered right back in the bottom
of the inning when an RBI double from Erin Carney scored Ali Vandever. Senior
Danika Miller followed later in the inning with a two-out two-run single to
push the Shocker lead to 6-1.
The Sycamores Abbie Malchow narrowed the Wichita State lead
in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run and Halee Myers pinch hit
RBI single made the score, 6-3.
In the pitching circle senior Katie Armagost started the
game and went 3.1 innings without allowing an earned run and striking out four.
Junior Sloan Anderson entered in the fourth inning and kept the momentum going
throwing the final 3.2 innings to pick up the victory. Anderson struck out a career-high
tying eight including five in row.
The Shockers will now begin a five-game road trip beginning
with a Wed., Mar. 20 doubleheader at SIU-Edwardsville at 3 p.m. before resuming
MVC play at Bradley Mar. 23-24.
