WICHITA, Kan. -
Laura Vickers hit a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning
to give the Shockers a split with Indiana State in the MVC-opening doubleheader
for both teams.
After a spirited comeback in Saturday's first game fell just
short the Shockers found themselves trailing again throughout the duration of
the afternoons second contest until a furious seventh inning snapped a six-game
losing streak and gave WSU its first home win of the season.
GAME ONE: INDIANA
STATE 4, WICHITA STATE 2
In Saturday's first game the Sycamores got on the scoreboard
first in the top of the third inning, 1-0, when Kelsey Montgomery scored on
Morgan Allee's single through the right side of the infield.
A pitchers duel took over from there as Indiana State's
Ashli Scott and Shocker starter Katie Armagost went toe-to-toe exchanging
scoreless innings and keeping both offenses at bay.
In the top of the seventh inning Alexa Cavin hit a two-out
two-run double to give the Sycamores some insurance plating Allee and Ashley Dickerson.
A throwing error from Melanie Jaegers behind the plate down to third base on
the following batter allowed Indiana State to push their lead to 4-0 entering
the final half inning.
The insurance runs in the top of the seventh proved to be necessary for Indiana
State as Brianne Bond and Erin Carney had back-to-back one-out singles in the
bottom of the frame. Danika Miller followed with a double to the gap in left
center to plate Kacie Eich (pinch-running for Bond) and Carney from first.
However, Scott strengthened and recorded consecutive outs to end the game.
Armagost finished her ninth complete game of the season
allowing six hits and two earned runs.
Scott was the story for the Sycamores giving up only five
hits and two earned runs in the victory.
GAME TWO: WICHITA
STATE 4, INDIANA STATE 3
Abbie Malchow's RBI groundout in the top of the first gave Indiana
State a 1-0 lead for the second game in a row.
Megan McCracken knocked in her team-leading eleventh RBI of
the season in the bottom of the second to knot the score, 1-1, on a two-out
single through the middle of the infield scoring Vickers from third base.
The Sycamores answered right back the following half inning
retaking the lead, 2-1, on a Shelby Wilson single that scored Allee from third.
Following three scoreless innings Indiana State added
another insurance run in the seventh with Allee scoring from third on a
fielding error from Erin Carney at third base.
The Shockers entered the bottom half of the inning down to
their final three outs and staring an 0-2 start in MVC play right in the face.
Jaegers got the inning started with a leadoff walk that was immediately
followed by a walk to Kaitlyn Carey on four straight pitches necessitating a
pitching change for the Sycamores. After Miller went down on strikes for the
first out of the inning senior Hayley Temple battled back from an 0-2 count to
earn the third walk of the inning and loading the bases with only one out. Ali
Vandever then sent a line drive single by the Sycamore third baseman scoring
Jaegers and getting Wichita State within one, 3-2, with one out and the bases
still loaded. That set the stage for Vickers who launched a deep fly ball into
a stiff breeze blowing straight in from center field over the head of the Indiana
State center fielder allowing Carey to score the tying run and Temple the
winning run from second base.
Vickers finished the game 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI's.
Junior Sloan Anderson earned her seventh victory of the
season in the circle allowing two earned runs in her seventh complete game of
2013.
The three-game series concludes Sunday with a 12 p.m. first
pitch at Wilkins Stadium.
