Box Score CARBONDALE, Ill.- In a wild game at SIU Arena, the Wichita
State men's basketball team fell to Southern Illinois, 64-62, on Tuesday night.
Senior Demetric Williams led the Shockers with 15 points and
seven rebounds. He shot 5-for-9 from the field, including 3-for-4 from behind
the arc. Tekele Cotton added 10 points and Carl Hall had eight points and three
blocks.
T.J. Lindsay had 14 points for the Salukis. Desmar Jackson
and Jeff Early added 11 points each in the winning effort.
Wichita State came out on fire, jumping out to a 29-12 lead
with seven minutes to go in the first half. Then Lindsay came off the bench and
caught fire for Southern Illinois, making four 3-pointers and pouring in 14
first-half points. The Shockers then struggled scoring the ball, going more
than 11 minutes without a field goal, committing eight turnovers and missing
nine shots during that span.
SIU took its first lead of the game on an Anthony Beane
jumper with 19:12 remaining in the game and held a nine-point lead, 57-48, with
5:45 remaining.
Wichita State came to life with a 12-1 run and had a 62-60
lead with possession of the ball and a minute remaining. Pendleton, a true
freshman, knotted the game with a driving layup with 48 seconds to go.
The Shockers then committed a 35-second violation, handing
the ball back to Southern Illinois with 11.1 seconds to go. Southern spread the
floor, Pendleton drove into the paint and launched a floater that was swatted
away by Ehimen Orukpe with 2.0 seconds left. Goaltending was called, and
Southern Illinois had its victory.
For the game, Wichita State shot 22-for-47 (.468) from the
field, including 8-for-16 from behind the arc. They also won the rebounding
battle, 33-27.
After two consecutive games on the road, the Shockers return
home to Charles Koch Arena on Saturday, February 9 for a game against Missouri
State. Tip is set for 6:30 p.m.
