SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -
Megan McCracken hit a pair of home runs including a walk-off grand slam in the
bottom of the fifth inning to propel Wichita State to a 13-4 five-inning
victory over Detroit. The victory helped offset a 3-2 loss to fellow Horizon
League member Wright State to begin the day.
Against Detroit (1-5) the Titans put the first notch on the
scoreboard in the top of the first inning with the first of two solo home runs
from first baseman Sara Cupp.
The home run by Cupp was nearly more costly for the
Shockers, but catcher Melanie Jaegers threw out the leadoff runner attempting
to steal third and picked off a runner at second base just prior to Cupp's home
run.
In the bottom of the inning Ali Vandever doubled home
Jaegers to even the score, 1-1. McCracken followed with her first home run of
the game, plating Vandever and giving the Shockers a 3-1 lead.
In the second inning Jaegers extended the Wichita State lead
to 5-1 on a double to right field scoring Danika Miller and Erin Carney.
After Cupp hit her second solo home run of the game in the
top of the third inning, the Shockers responded in bottom of the frame with a
bases clearing double to right center from freshman Brittany Fortner to take an
8-2 lead.
Carney put the Shockers up 9-2 in the bottom of the fourth
scoring Hayley Temple from second base on a RBI single up the middle.
Detroit made a last ditch comeback effort cutting the
Wichita State lead to 9-4 in the top of the fifth scoring on an illegal pitch
and a RBI double.
Fortner started the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff walk
and advancing to second on a single by Jaegers. Vandever then reached on a
fielders choice when her grounder to the Detroit shortstop was misplayed
attempting to throw out Jaegers at second loading the bases for McCracken.
McCracken got ahead of Titan pitcher Julia Maksym 2-1 before
launching the game winning grand slam deep over the left field fence.
McCracken finished the game 2-for-3 with two home runs and
six RBI's.
Sloan Anderson earned the victory in the circle throwing
three innings and allowing two earned runs to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Against Wright State the Shockers were unable to capitalize
on another strong outing from senior hurler Katie Armagost.
Armagost threw her fourth complete game of the season
allowing two earned runs and striking out four Raiders hitters.
In the bottom of the second Wright State's Alanna Williams
singled through the left side of the infield with two outs scoring Colleen
Schneider from third base.
Jaegers scored from third base on a throwing error by the
Wright State catcher attempting to throw out Vandever attempting to steal
second in the top of the third to even the score, 1-1.
Wichita State took their first and only lead of the game in
the top of the fifth when Jaegers scored for the second time on a sacrifice fly
off the bat of Vandever.
The lead was short lived as Wright State got another two-out
RBI single to even the game in the bottom of the fifth.
After a scoreless sixth inning the Shockers looked in
position to take back the lead in the top of the seventh getting a leadoff walk
from Brianne Bond. Molly Baker pinch ran for Bond and advanced to second on a
sacrifice bunt from Jaegers and on to third on a groundout to first by Miller.
Wright State pitcher Krystian DeWitt responded striking out Vandever on a 3-2
pitch to end the threat.
In the bottom of the seventh Taylor Knore knocked a two-out
RBI double into the gap in right centerfield for the walk-off win.
Wichita State will take on SEC West member Mississippi State
tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Greenbrook Park in Southaven, Miss.
