Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo.- The Wichita State men's basketball team defeated Brigham Young, 75-62, in the championship game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at the Sprint Center Tuesday night.
Ron Baker was named tournament MVP after scoring a career-high 23 points on 5-of-16 shooting from the field and 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Cleanthony Early was named to the All-Tournament team, contributing 12 points and Fred VanVleet added 12 points, including 10 over three minutes to pull Wichita State ahead late in the game.
Brigham Young started the game a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc to fuel a 19-2 run over the first six minutes. Wichita State then scored eight unanswered points to pull the score with five, 21-16, to force a Cougar timeout with 9:35 left in the half.
A 3-pointer from Baker with 6:37 left in the half gave Wichita State its first lead since the 19:33 mark, and the Shockers led by as many as six before Brigham Young went on a 10-2 run to go into the locker room with a 36-34 lead.
Baker led all scorers at the half with 10 points and pulled down four rebounds. Cotton added seven for Wichita State on 3-of-4 shooting. The Shockers shot 33 percent (13-for-39) from the field and 17 percent (3-for-17) from 3-point range in the first half.
The Cougars shot 42 percent (12-for-28) from the field and 50 percent (5-for-10) from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.
The score was back-and-forth most of the second half until eight straight points by VanVleet extended the Shocker lead to 62-57 with 3:38 left in the game. Free throws kept the Cougars in the game, however, shooting 11 straight over five minutes to keep within reach.
Wichita State went on a 9-1 run, sparked by a jumper in the lane by VanVleet with 2:10 remaining to pull ahead for good and the Shockers went on to win, 75-62.
Wichita State shot 35 percent (24-for-68) for the game and held Brigham Young to 31 percent (18-for-58). The Shockers had six steals, six blocks and forced 13 turnovers.
The Shockers will travel to St. Louis on Sun., Dec. 1 to take on the St. Louis Billikens. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. and will be shown on CBS Sports Network.
