NORMAN, Okla. The No. 62 Wichita State women's tennis fell
to No. 44 Oklahoma, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Headington Family Tennis
Center.
The Shocker women came out strong in the doubles competition
when Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova defeated Whitney Wofford and Emma
Devine, 8-2. Oklahoma then came back, as Zita Engbrooks and Hermon Brhane
defeated Montse Blasco Fernandez and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul, 8-3. In the match
that decided the doubles point, the two teams fought in a close match, but
Oklahoma captured the first point of the match as Mia Lancaster and Abbi
Melrose defeated Carla Venticinque and Rebecca Pedrazzi, 8-7.
The Shockers then fell in four of the six singles contests
to give Oklahoma the victory. Rebecca Pedrazzi defeated Whitney Wofford, 6-2,
2-6, 7-5, and Veronika Blaskova defeated Abbi Melrose, 6-1, 7-6, to keep their
singles records at 2-0 so far in the team season.
Wichita State will play their first home match of the season
on Monday, January 21 at Wichita Country Club against No. 40 Oklahoma State. First
serve is set for 11 a.m.
