DES MOINES, Iowa --
The Wichita State softball team saw their season come to an end Sunday
afternoon at Drake. The Shockers had needed a victory to advance to the
Missouri Valley Conference Tournament next week in Carbondale, Ill. but were
unable to get by a hot hitting Drake team, falling 7-2.
Nicole Randel's second inning two-run home run gave Drake
the early 2-0 advantage as starting pitcher Jordan Greenwood struck out five
batters in the first two innings.
Hayley Nybo followed in the third inning with a deep
three-run home run to left field to push the Bulldog lead to 5-0.
Wichita State mounted their lone rally of the game in the
fourth inning when Hayley Temple's double to left center scored Sydney Stuever
and Erin Carney's follow-up single to right field brought Temple around to
close the Bulldog lead to 5-2.
The Shockers would get no closer as Randel added a two-run
double in the fifth inning to regain a five run lead for Drake, 7-2.
Drake will advance to the MVC Tournament as the number three
seed and will face the winner of the 6/7 matchup, Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
