Late Rally Falls Short at Indiana State

4/22/2012 2:29:00 PM

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Wichita State lost the rubber match of their weekend series at Indiana State, Sunday at Price Field, 7-6.

The Sycamores got on the scoreboard in the third inning to take an early 2-0 lead with an RBI triple from Shelby Wilson followed by an RBI single from Haley Tinsman.

Wichita State (12-34, 5-15) briefly took the momentum of the game in the fifth inning when Erin Carney ripped a double off the base of the right field wall to score Melanie Jaegers cutting the Indiana State lead to 2-1. However, Indiana State (18-26, 5-14) answered right back in the bottom-of-the fifth inning with three runs to extend their lead to 5-1.

Hayley Temple's RBI groundout in the sixth inning gave brief life to a comeback, but the Shockers left runners stranded on the corners to end the rally. Indiana State then countered with a Tinsman two-run home run to left field in the bottom-of the sixth inning to increase the lead to 7-2.

Wichita State made one final comeback in the seventh inning getting a two-run double from Sydney Stuever and another two-run double from Hayley Temple to cut the Sycamore lead to 7-6. Pitching her third complete game of the series for Indiana State, Lindsey Beisser induced a game ending popup with Temple at second base representing the tying run.

Six Shocker hitters had hits in the game including two each for Andale, Kan. natives Stuever and Carney.

Wichita State will return home for their final four home games of the season this week beginning with a Wednesday game against rival Missouri State at 6 p.m. The Shockers will then take on the Bradley Braves in a three game series April 28-29 to close out the 2012 home schedule.
