SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -
Wichita State salvaged a series split in Springfield, Mo. taking game two of
Wednesday's doubleheader with Missouri Valley Conference rival Missouri State, 5-1.
Game One
Wichita State was unable to capitalize on a spectacular
pitching performance from junior Katie Armagost. The Wichita, Kan. native allowed
one run on one hit, but took the loss in a fast paced pitchers duel with
Missouri State senior Natalie Rose.
Rose struck out 12 Wichita State batters without issuing a
walk and worked around six singles for the complete game shutout.
Hayley Temple was the only Shocker to collect multiple hits
off of Rose and finished the game 2-for-3. Wichita State outhit the Bears 6-1 in the loss.
Game Two
Sophomore Sloan Anderson escaped early trouble en route to
throwing a complete game. Anderson got crucial third outs in the first, second
and fourth innings stranding multiple runners in scoring position giving up
only one run and six hits.
The two teams exchanged scoreless frames through the first
five innings before Wichita State's offense finally came to life in the sixth
inning. With Danika Miller and Sydney Stuever in scoring position, Hayley
Temple delivered a two-out, two-run single through the middle of the infield
for the first Shocker runs of the day.
Missouri State starting pitcher Chelsea Jones cut the
Shocker lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single.
Jones carried the momentum back to the mound in the seventh
inning getting two quick outs and getting pinch hitter Holly Eckert into a two
strike count. However, the senior knocked a base hit through the left side of
the infield to prolong the inning and Miller followed with another single.
Missouri State then called on Rose to return to the game and
put an end to the Shocker rally. Freshman Sydney Stuever had other ideas drilling
Rose's pitch over the fence in right centerfield for her third home run of the
season and increasing the Shocker lead to comfortable, 5-1, margin.
Anderson closed out her tenth complete game of the season in
the bottom of the inning and gave the Shockers their fourth win in five games.
Wichita State will continue their 10-game conference road
trip this weekend with a return trip to Indiana to take on Indiana State. The
series begins with a doubleheader Saturday at noon and 2 p.m.
