EVANSVILLE, Ind. -
The Wichita State softball team swept Saturday's doubleheader against
Evansville and earned their first two Missouri Valley Conference wins of the
season.
Erin Carney's fourth inning solo home run over the left
field foul pole was all the offense needed for Wichita State's 1-0 victory in
game one. Starting pitcher Katie Armagost took control from there, tossing 6.1
shutout innings and striking out four Purple Aces hitters.
Wichita State looked to be in command of the game throughout
the day until the bottom-of-the seventh inning brought the Cooper Stadium crowd
to the edge of their seats. The Purple Aces loaded the bases with only one out
and the Missouri Valley Conference's leading hitter, Kayla Fortner, coming to bat.
Seeking a change of pace, head coach Kristi Bredbenner called on sophomore Sloan
Anderson from the bullpen to finish off the Shocker's first conference win of
the season. Anderson delivered in grand fashion striking out Fortner and
getting Evansville cleanup hitter Amy Gaertner to lineout to left fielder
Sydney Stuever to earn the save.
Riding a wave of confidence from the save in game one,
Anderson took a perfect game into the fifth inning and earned the complete game
victory in game two's 7-1 victory, giving up one run on three hits.
The Shockers used a balanced offensive attack and a five run
third inning to maintain a comfortable margin throughout. Wichita State scored five runs with two outs in the third to
take control of the game and never looked back. The third inning RBI's were
attributed to Layne Greenlee, Carney, and Melanie Jaegers and two more from
junior Hayley Temple. Greenlee and Rachel Milnark added RBI's in the sixth
inning for some extra insurance.
The weekend series with Evansville concludes
Sunday at noon.
