WICHITA, Kan. - A
trio of home runs from Northern Iowa was too much to overcome for Wichita State
as the Panthers completed a weekend sweep of the Shockers Sunday at Wilkins
Stadium, 4-2.
The Panthers got solo home runs from Gina Brown and Julia Hunter and a two-run homer from Melissa Walls to build a 4-0 lead through five and a
half innings.
Wichita State got their offense in the bottom of the fifth
courtesy of a single up the middle form Brianne Bond that plated Hayley Temple.
The cutoff throw from centerfield ricocheted off of the first baseman near the
pitchers circle into the Shocker dugout advancing Holly Eckert home and Bond to
third base.
The final innings proved to be about the pitchers as UNI
starter Jamie Fisher finished with a complete game for her eleventh victory of
the season. Wichita State got an equally impressive performance from Katie
Armagost, who entered in the fifth inning and threw three shutout innings, to
keep the Shockers within striking distance.
Fisher worked her way out of a few late-inning jams to foil
the Shockers' final comeback efforts.
The Shockers will have a full slate of home games this
coming week with a visit from Tulsa Wednesday at 6 p.m. before playing host to
Creighton for a weekend series beginning with a doubleheader Friday at 12 p.m.
