TEMPE, Ariz.- Home runs by Erin Carney and Brianne Bond were not enough as Wichita State lost a nail biter to Boise State, 5-4, in the Shockers final game of the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational Sunday morning.
After falling behind 3-0 through four innings, Carney delivered a game tying three-run home run to left field in the bottom-of-the fifth to even the game at 3-3. Boise State then answered with a single run in both the sixth and seventh innings to stretch their lead to 5-3 that set up some last inning drama with the Shockers down to their final at-bat.
Brianne Bond hit a one-out solo home run to left field to cut the lead to one as the Shockers seemed to gain momentum for a final comeback. After a Haley Temple groundout Sammie Shook reached on a fielding error by the Boise State shortstop to bring Carney back to the plate as the potential game-winning run. Consecutive questionable ball/strike calls by the home plate umpire to open Carney's at-bat left the sophomore in a tough spot and she eventually struck out to end the game.
Lela Work picked up the victory for Boise State in relief of starting pitcher Allie Crump.
The Shockers will return to Wichita for their first home games of the season Wednesday when they play host to Loyola-Chicago for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
