WICHITA, Kan.- The Shocker women's tennis team hits the road
this weekend for two matches. They will take on Wyoming on Saturday in Laramie, Wyo. at noon; then they will head to Denver, Colo. on Sunday
to take on Denver at 1 p.m.
The No. 62 Wyoming Cowgirls (5-4) will be
well rested for their matchup against the Shockers. Their last time out, the
Cowgirls defeated Idaho, 5-2. Wyoming brings with them the No. 60 doubles team
in the nation, which consists of Junior Simona Synkova and Sophomore Veronica
Popovici. The duo is 3-4 in dual match competition and play in the number one
spot.
The Denver Pioneers (8-3) are coming off a
very successful weekend. They defeated Air Force, 5-2, on Friday, Feb. 24 and
Colorado, 5-2, on Sunday, Feb. 26. Junior Sophia Bergner plays in the number
one singles position and is 9-2 in dual match competition. The Pioneer's
sophomore combination of Natalie Dunn and Caroline Schnell is 8-3 on the
season, playing in the three position. Before taking on the Shockers, Denver
will head to Laramie, Wyo. on Friday to take on Wyoming.
Wichita State (6-4) is coming off a weekend
that saw them lose to No. 27 Nebraska, 6-1, and defeat both Colorado State and
Creighton, 7-0. With their win against Creighton, the Shockers earned their
first conference win of the season. It was another successful week for senior
Lutfiana Budiharto. She went 3-0 in singles on the weekend, in the process
defeating No. 57 Mary Weatherholt from Nebraska, 0-6, 6-4, 1-0(8).
Budiharto is now the No. 99 singles player in the nation.
After their matches against Wyoming and Denver, the Shocker
women will return home on Saturday, March 17 for matches against North Texas
and Cowley County at the Sheldon Colman Tennis Complex.
