Shockers Shut Down SIU, 85-42

Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State scored 30 points off of Southern Illinois turnovers en route to the Shockers' 85-42 win Saturday in a Missouri Valley Conference men's basketball game at Charles Koch Arena.

The Shockers forced Southern Illinois into 22 turnovers, including 10 in the first nine minutes of the game, as Wichita State secured its seventh-straight win in front of a sellout crowd of 10,506.

Four Shockers finished with double-digit point totals in the win that improved Wichita State's record to 17-3 overall and 8-1 in MVC play.

Joe Ragland and Carl Hall led the Shocker starters with 11 points each. David Kyles came in off the bench to add another 11 points, followed closely by Jake White's 10 points, which set a new career high for the freshman.

Wichita State's bench players combined to score 42 points, matching Southern Illinois' final point total.

Shocker Ehimen Orukpe led all players with a career-high nine rebounds and four blocks, as Shocker center Garrett Stutz sat out Saturday's game due to injury.

Dantiel Daniels led SIU with 12 points and eight rebounds. SIU's Mamadou Seck, who leads the Salukis in scoring and rebounding this season, was held to four points and three rebounds in 13 minutes Saturday.

Early in the first half, both teams struggled to find their offensive touches. The Shockers missed five of their first six shots in the game, as the teams combined for a 2-2 score through the game's first four minutes.

SIU turnovers then helped spark the Shockers' offense, as 16 of Wichita State's first 18 points came off of turnovers.

A 14-0 Wichita State run pushed the Shockers to an 18-4 lead, as the Salukis committed 13 turnovers in the first half.

The Shockers went on to hold Southern Illinois to 16 points in the first half - the fewest allowed by Wichita State in an opening half this season.

In the second half, Wichita State continued to build on its lead.

A layup and free throw from Demetric Williams midway through the second half extended the Shockers to a 30-point edge.

A Randall Vautravers' tip-in pushed the Shockers ahead by 41 with less than four minutes to go.

The Shockers improved to 10-1 at home this season.

Southern Illinois fell to 6-14 overall and 3-6 in the conference.

Shocker All-American baseball players Carl Hall and Mike Pelfrey, as well as track & field/cross country All-American Desiraye Osburn Speer, were honored at halftime of the game. The three former Shockers were the 2012 inductees into the Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame.

Wichita State next hosts Evansville at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25 at Charles Koch Arena.
